IOS update will support older phone up to 5 years ago.

For IOS 14, it is as old as Iphone 6s

yup that's one thing very good about apple.
But since they control the phone, OS and prioritise customer experience, that's what they are good at. It's not really possible for android to have the same considerations. Cos there are too many disparate hardware configurations and slight mods of the pure android OS out there.

I believe Samsung and some other manufacturers commit to 3 years updates starting from the model release.

Lesson is always update when it's 14.1 or 14.2. Never XX.0 [laugh]

I think we'll be seeing a 14.1 release for iPhone `12` and a 14.2 release for everyone. iOS 14.2 beta was just released for developers.

In Apple, they want people to use their devices for as long as possible because they get more of their revenues from services. Android devices, on the other hand, gets their revenue by selling people more devices, that's why their software updates could only guarantee up to 2 years (that is if you haven't migrated to newer device yet).
