Quieter, greener vehicles part of plan for all public buses to run on cleaner energy by 2040

Singapore has taken another step in its move to reduce the carbon footprint of public transport, with the deployment of the first 10 fully-electric double-decker buses yesterday.

The buses will ply the roads on service 983 in Choa Chu Kang, service 189 in Bukit Batok and Clementi, and service 83 in Punggol and Sengkang, and may be redeployed to other bus routes later.

The vehicles, supplied by the Chinese Yutong-Nari consortium, are said to be more environmentally friendly, quieter and more user-friendly than conventional buses that run on diesel.

However, the new buses cost up to twice that of conventional diesel buses. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it hopes the cost will come down over time with changes in technology and wider adoption.

At a formal unveiling of the buses yesterday, Senior Minister of State for Transport Chee Hong Tat said Singapore remains open to new technology and is "not in a rush" to commit to anyone technology or model.

"We are doing it because it is better for the environment and this is an initial step to a greener future. We will have more options to choose from when technology progresses," he said.

He added that there was no fixed sum that the Government had allocated to replace conventional diesel buses. "What we have done instead is to set ourselves a goal by 2040," he said.

The plan is to have all of Singapore's 5,800 public buses run on cleaner energy by 2040.

The 10 buses join 15 electric single-decker buses that have already been deployed between April and July.

I still think hybrid bus like diesel electric / petrol electric will be a more feasible transport plan. With electric bus, you need like 2-3 bus standby to rotate on the same routes. But with a hybrid, I think it can cover more distance and save on interchange space. (for charging)

End of the day, with electric bus, will the bus fare be cheaper? 😅

EV public buses? The bus can last to run the whole day meh?  Since one full charge can last between 200km to 300km?!

Ya lor. I don't think it is wise. our country so hot. the battery sure gone very fast one.

Unless they can do a solar electric bus. No need charging. can just keep going. Pressphoto3-cropped.jpg&f=1&nofb=1

Still in trial period.  Thats why they buy only a small number to try out first.

But dont know if the ride is better in an EV bus than diesel bus? Maybe find one day go take this EV bus?! [:p]

Not sure if current solar panels have reached that level of efficiency to power the vehicle directly yet. But either way, it can still prolong the distance travelled per charge, perhaps this might be the answer to extending the range of an EV and making it cheaper at the same time (smaller battery).

I think the EV bus should be nicer than the diesels, at least it will be quieter and cooler for the passengers at the rear.

Actually those newer diesel bus also quite quiet and aircon all the times feel like freezer.

I see, good to know there is improvement going along for the diesels as well. Hopefully the electric buses won't sound like the Blue SG cars. Don't know why is there such a loud humming sound coming from them. It makes diesel cars sound so much more soothing in comparison 🤣

Whenever the bus go back interchange, charge it lo.

This kind of EV usually runs on 800v similar to Taycan.

Likely can do a 100kwh charging.  It means that every trip can start with full battery.

They better start to stand by all these equipments for electric fire.

You take those MAN A22/A95 buses, bus not very noisy and aircon super cold. Lol.

But buses go back interchange the stopping time is quite short, enough time to charge?

That's why Taycan use 800v rather 400v (Tesla).

With higher voltage, charging can be completed at a lower amp (current).

Lower current = lower temperature.

Lower temperature = lower fire risk.

Haha!  Beat you to it.... Took the single deck electric busses in hainan two years back...  But their busses,  the size about 3/4 of our regular bus.

Best part is only pay 4cents RMB if paying by cashless. But we did not have account so paid cash... RMB $2 instead. Don't know if it was a promo or not?
