Futuristic flying 'AirCar' that can transform from a road vehicle into a plane in under THREE MINUTES takes to the skies for the first time

A flying sports car that can go from road vehicle to aircraft in just three minutes has flown 1,500ft in the air over Slovakia as part of a test flight, its developers say.

Sensational footage of the AirCar, developed by Slovakian firm KleinVision, shows it driving on a runway, stopping to deploy wings, and then soaring through the air.

This is the fifth prototype of the flying car and developers say it would be great for leisure and self-driving journeys, or as a commercial taxi service.

No price details have been revealed for the futuristic vehicle, but it can travel for about 620 miles at a time and could be seen in the air and on the roads from next year.

According to its developers it completed two 1,500ft test flights at Piestany Airport in Slovakia this week, bringing it a step closer to commercial flight. 

Designed by Professor Stefan Klein, the AirCar safely completed two takeoffs and landings as part of the test run.

Cars can be heavy, but planes must be light and so finding that balance for the AirCar was a major challenge for Klein and his team. 

The two-seat model, tested in Slovakia this week, weights 2,425lb and can carry an additional load of 440lb per flight, the company said.

Powered by a BMW 1.6l engine, the car-plane has an effective power output of 140HP and the estimated travel range of AirCar is 621 miles.

It requires a runway of at least 984ft to get from ground to sky and can reach speeds of up to 124 miles per hours, according to Klein. 

AirCar has wings that unfurl and a single propeller at the read. The wings fold up when the vehicle is on the road and it takes up the space of a normal packing spot. 

'The wing and tail deployment/retraction mechanism is very impressive, converting the automobile into an airplanem' said Dr Branko Sarh, former Boeing expert.

'The cockpit providing space for the driver/pilot and a passenger is very roomy and nicely styled. The overall appearance of the flying car on road and in the air is superb,' Sarh added.

It requires a runway of at least 984ft to get from ground to sky and can reach speeds of up to 124 miles per hours, according to Klein. The developers say it has been designed so that the stability and controllability of the AirCar is accessible to any pilot, with no specialist training required.

'The key flight parameters confirmed all theoretical concepts and calculations that the development of the AirCar was based on,' Professor Klein said.

When all of the legally required flight tests are completed they plan to fit the craft with a more powerful engine and hope to have it ready for sale within six months. 

No price details have been revealed for the futuristic vehicle but it can travel for about 620 miles in the air and could be seen in the air and on the roads next year. The company already has a buyer interested in purchasing one of the AirCars when it passes all future tests and is ready to fly - or drive. 

'With AirCar you will arrive at your destination without the hassle of getting a ride to airport and passing through commercial security,' said co-found Anton Zajac.

'You can drive your AirCar to the golf course, the office, the mall or your hotel and park it in a normal parking space,' said Zajac added.

Impressive, but that might mean also that drivers of that car will also need to have private pilot license and there will be a whole slew of international flight framework to manage this.

It's gonna be the next disruption.

Looks like flying cars are not something really new. Seems like its more about the execution of this concept into our daily lives than technology alone.

If that is the case, then these flying car companies are like developing things ahead of the society (governments) acceptance. We can easily imagine right now if all our cars are flying cars how will it be like? 😱

Agree, from a practical standpoint, a car that can fly like a helicopter makes much more sense.

Only useful for Australia. Can fly to your outback farm air strip and then drive straight to the house. Maybe can just land on the road.

 

No need for someone to pick you up.

the ideal of a flying car come out cos ppl want to beat the traffic jam.

This one is more practical, and have already gotten the approval to be put on the road and in air, in Europe. However, in order to fly the car in the air, you will need a flying license. [crazy]

PAL-V Liberty Flying Car Hits The Road As It Becomes Street-Legal In Europe

PAL-V Liberty, the self-proclaimed world’s first flying car, has received approval for road usage and can now be legally used on European streets.

The Liberty passed the stringent European road admission tests and now is allowed on the road with an official license plate. This marks the completion of a rigorous and extensive drive test program carried out on test tracks since February 2020.

After drives on high-speed ovals, brake and emission tests, as well as noise pollution testing, the PAL-V Liberty is now ready to be driven on public roads. This breakthrough means the flying car is another step closer to achieve certification for flying.

Since 2015, the PAL-V Liberty’s design has been going through aviation certification with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), with finalization expected in 2022. The Liberty benefits from the certification experience accumulated in the earlier flight test program with the PAL-V One.

Before the final 150 hours of flight testing can take place, over 1,200 test reports need to be completed. After this, the company will be able to start deliveries to customers. For the coming months, however, the Liberty will be undergoing endurance testing on public roads across Europe.

“We have been cooperating with the road authorities for many years to reach this milestone. The excitement you feel in the team is huge,” said Mike Stekelenburg, PAL-V’s CTO. “It was very challenging to make a ‘folded aircraft’ pass all road admission tests. For me, the trick in successfully making flying car is to ensure that the design complies with both air and road regulations.”

Here’s how Hans Joore, the test driver of the PAL-V Liberty, described the first outing on public roads: “Hearing the vehicle come to life was just magnificent and driving it was great. It is very smooth and responsive to the steering and with a weight of just 660 kg it accelerates really well. The overall experience is like a sports car. It feels sensational.”

PAL-V says reservations are growing “beyond expectation”, despite a $399,000 starting price for the base Liberty Sport Edition. Around 80 per cent of reservation holders are new to aviation, and that’s why some of them have already started training for a gyroplane flying license at the PAL-V FlyDrive Academy.
