Bloomberg reported on Dec. 2 that ride-hailing platforms Grab and Gojek have made "substantial progress" in working out a merger deal, which is looking to be the "biggest internet merger in Southeast Asia".

The information was provided by people with knowledge of the merger discussion.

It is apparently being discussed by senior leaders from Gojek and Grab, as well as SoftBank Group Corp., an investor in Grab.

While the talks might not result in anything concrete, it is said that if and when the merger proceeds, Grab co-founder Anthony Tan will become the new company's chief executive officer.

The merged entity will also run under the Gojek brand in Indonesia.

Bloomberg's sources said Grab and Gojek are ultimately hoping to merge with the aim of becoming a publicly-listed company.

When Mothership contacted Grab for comment on the matter, a spokesperson said:

"We don't comment on market speculations, so no comment on this."

Anti-competition concerns

This merger will draw scrutiny from regulators who will have concerns about anti-competition, considering that both parties hold large market shares in many of the countries they operate in.

When Grab and Uber merged in 2018, they were fined a combined S$13 million by the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS).

The CCCS said that the Uber-Grab merger reduced competition and increased prices for consumers.

More recently in July this year, Indonesia's anti-monopoly watchdog, the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), fined Grab Indonesia and its car rental partner, PT Teknologi Pengangkutan Indonesia (TPI), a combined IDR 49 billion (S$4.7 million) for carrying out discriminatory practices against drivers.

The KPPU said that Grab Indonesia gave preferential treatment -- including the allotment of priority orders -- to drivers using cars from TPI.

Grab Indonesia denied it.

Gojek so small here.  No concern

It is not about market size here, but in the entire region. And with Grab eating up its competitor each time (remember Uber), they will soon grow to a size too big for potential new player to handle, which is against the anti-competition laws.

Imagine NTUC merging with SS, Giant one by one over a few years (and gain extra bargaining power with economies of scale), how can smaller and new player survive if they want to setup supermart in Singapore? At the end of the day, who are the one on the receiving end? It is we, the consumer, as the market lacks competition...

It is time for the various governing authorities and agencies to step in and regulate the scene, if these agencies are truly independent (and not bowing to Temasek Group).

Softbank was behind Uber pulling out of this region.

Softbank is the investor of Uber, Gojek & Grab.

Softbank might be behind this merger.

Similar to Uber, Gojek can close its business here.  Nothing much CCS can do other than issue fines.

There are not a lot of VC around to fund this kind of biz venture nowadays.

merge is the most clever and foolproof way of bypassing anti-competition laws loh.

with the law they cannot share price and package.

with the merge they become 1 company , how they set price and charges is up to them .

are are we going to say they cannot operate here and other s.e asia country will chase them away if they really merge??

Grab has diversified into food, payment services etc

Whereas Gojek is still just ride hailing I believe.

Have used Grab and Gojek ride hailing services, all same same to me, its all about promo codes. [sly]

Need to ask why grab makan uber and now wanna makan gojek.

Is it really possible for 2 competitors to exist in Singapore profitably? My answer is no .

As I said to you numerous times, you need to read more.

Who says merger can bypass anti-competition law?

This merger requires the approval of CCS.  It is unlikely CCS will approve it.

Gojek might do The Uber thing.

Gojek has more biz in its home country than elsewhere.

Honestly i don't like one big enterprise coy calling the shot, they want a bigger pie and controlling the price, i would prefer competition and pricing among one another, seems that Grab has this idea all along to be one main body competing against all taxi company 9 Blue, red, silver and green colour taxi.

The game plan is over and public perception has less say over surge period, over time Grab will flex their muscle controlling everything thy can hold, don't get me wrong, I still like Grab over the rest, it just that I don't like Main big boys calling the shot, just like one brother NTUC is main recognised Supermarket here, we would prefer supermarket like Hao in Turf City, the layout and products shelving are functional yet loads of branding recognition plus display are visible & competitive pricing.

Never allow one main board calling the shot over , citizens will be controlled juz like G's policy [drivingcar]
