must agree with u on this. we  look at amdk.

they hold their engineers and cook and mech in high respect ( dun know how to call it )

but here, engineer cooks  mech tyre man is a lower level of work.

The word is dignity, if you've forgotten how to call it. If you earn too low, you have no dignity when talking to industry leaders. Lim Wee Kiak say one 😁

Grooming the next Fei Siong Group. Our new diploma holder Hawkerpreneurs can aspire.

School Dropout To Hawker: This S'porean Now Runs A F&B Empire That Made $150M Annual Revenue

In 1985, the then-15-year-old Tan Kim Siong dropped out of school to work full-time in a hawker stall.

49-year-old Kim Beng had dropped out of primary school, while 44-year-old Kim Leng studied at Ngee Ann Polytechnic before he decided to drop out to join Fei Siong Group.

The key is determination and a lot of hard work I guess.

Seriously, the govt has ran out of ideas for locals. Hawkers, drivers, security guards, F&B, cleaners. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Letting in all the FTs do the office and higher end jobs.

Studied 3 years for diploma then asked people to be hawkers. Secondary school dropout also can be hawkers.

Why don’t ‘fry bee hoon without any fire’ Amy Khor asked her kids to be hawkers? Lead by example Mdm.

Just because got the UNESCO thingy then try to make it glamorous by giving it a fanciful name Hawkerpreneur.

What’s next? Cleanerpreneur? Securpreneur?

yea .. .this is the biggest joke  ...  they are very proud to say thousands of job created wor example : waiter (Jumbo group offering up to 2000 jobs for ex-SIA crew),  social distancing officers, etc ... really LMAO ....

But for those without savings to tie them over the 'crisis'  .. perhaps like the chinese saying goes :  " Horse Die Get Down Walk"  ... that's  why many become Uber/Grab Drivers  ... probably more pride than becoming waiter/waitress or social distancing officers ... no need to 抛头露面 , and stand or walk long hours, 。。。

p/s: I am not implying service sectors are low class or embarrassing ... just many may find it difficult to adjust ..

Exactly. The best ROI is to get the stuff from centralised food factories cooked by lowly paid bangla or PRC. They can just do the plating, collect $$ and appear in ST as a 'hawkerpreneur' success story.....lol

And what's your USP?

Have to agree to a certain extent.

On one hand, we need locals to carry on the trade else the usual hawker fare we've taken for granted will simply disappear in 1 generation's time. I can understand the need to promote hawker as a viable trade. This is coming from a way of life point of view, and it's something unique to SG.

But, glamour dressing it as something fancy and full of future potential is just dumb and making a false impression. Being a hawker, whether successful or not, is back breaking tough work. You certainly don't need simi stupid cert or diploma to cook authentic hawker fare. As you had point it out rightly, academic qualifications simply count for nothing.

The way I see it is the same as you. UNESCO heritage, thus see a sudden need to glamourised, preserve and promote being a hawker. The fact is that the best and most authentic hawker fare are born from the streets, not from some culinary school or institutions. It doesn't mean that if one graduate with a hawkerpreneurship diploma, the market will simply accept his bak chor mee at $10 a bowl, instead of the usual $4.

Then on the other hand, we have the G getting in private organisations such as Timbre, NTUC, Koufu, Kopitiam, Fei Siong to run hawker centres thinly disguised as social enterprises. Pay rent per stall at $4k to these organisations vs $2k from NEA. Still thinking that locals will take it up hook, line and sinker? Get real man.

No, the key is, you got to either have little choice, or burn your bridges - e.g. drop out of school, no cert or paper qualification for other job - so there's no temptation to turn back from difficulties. No turning back. Many successful entrepreneurs have this background.

Then would diploma holders want to join this Hawkerpreneur scheme?
