I tell the next problem we going to have

It's our wet market stalls.  Without young generations taking over the butchery, vegetables, seafood, poultry stalls, the wet markets will be gone.

Which young gen will work as a butcher, fishmonger or vegetable seller?

SINGAPORE - A new work-study programme to help ease the entry of young people into the hawker trade will be launched in March.

The Work-Study Post-Diploma (Certificate in Hawkerpreneurship), which comes under the SkillsFuture Singapore work-study programme, is the first of its kind.

Announcing the programme at the second edition of the SG Hawker Seminar on Monday (Jan 11), Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor said: "With the increasing recognition and appreciation of hawker fare, setting up a hawker stall can be considered as a gateway into the F&B sector, and there could be budding food and beverage entrepreneurs who may aspire to join the hawker trade."

She said the National Environment Agency (NEA) and SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will work together with Temasek Polytechnic to launch the programme as a new track under the Hawkers' Development Programme (HDP), which was started in January last year to equip hawkers with the relevant skills and competencies to run a hawker stall.

The 12-month programme, which takes in its first batch in March, will be open to all recent graduates from polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education.

Participants will undergo a two-month classroom-based training, followed by a four-month apprenticeship and a six-month mentorship with experienced hawkers.

The programme can accommodate about 50 people over three years, and both mentors and apprentices will receive a monthly training allowance of $500 and $1,000 respectively.

As at Jan 1 this year, more than 170 people have completed the training stage of the HDP, and 41 of them are moving on to the final stage of setting up their incubation stalls.

Due to the encouraging response, the number of training places under the scheme will be increased from 100 to 300 places over the next two years, said Dr Khor.

In line with that, the number of incubation stalls under the Incubation Stall Programme (ISP), will go up from the current 20 to 80 stalls in the next few years.

The ISP supports aspiring hawkers by providing them with pre-fitted stalls and subsidised rentals for over 15 months.

Dr Khor also said support has been given to hawkers to help them digitalise, in the form of a new module launched by NEA and SSG titled Adapt to Change - Digitalisation for Hawkers under the HDP.

The module, which began its inaugural run last month, is taught by Nanyang Polytechnic's Asian Culinary Institute.

She said: "To keep our hawker culture thriving, we cannot just do the same things (in) the same way. We need to adapt to change and do the same things in different ways, which is borne out by our experience with the Covid-19 pandemic."

New Hawker Programme And How Government & Elites Failed Singaporeans

https://chem-post.blogspot.com/2021/01/new-hawker-programme-and-how-government.html?spref=fb&m=1&fbclid=IwAR03ynvjl8dGoPBpA9UewNzbLyYaHs6nuVygfhbwJcDPuVT1uCfUwhvGXoc

I was really looking forward to read this article, until somewhere in the 2nd paragraph, this line appears :

"The government fudges the statistics by embedding foreigners with PR status together with local residents"

To be fair, the above is not true. It has always been clear the number of Singaporeans and PR. As of 2020, the number of Singapore Citizens is 3.523m and the number of PR is 521k.  The author just have to google it. They have never fudge the statistics.

I don't mind articles that critique  certain policies, but they should be factual.

Don’t bother reading it because it’s never for you.

You are just one of these:

Many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

Don’t bother replying to me too. Thanks.

Have to agree to a certain extent.

On one hand, we need locals to carry on the trade else the usual hawker fare we've taken for granted will simply disappear in 1 generation's time. I can understand the need to promote hawker as a viable trade. This is coming from a way of life point of view, and it's something unique to SG.

But, glamour dressing it as something fancy and full of future potential is just dumb and making a false impression. Being a hawker, whether successful or not, is back breaking tough work. You certainly don't need simi stupid cert or diploma to cook authentic hawker fare. As you had point it out rightly, academic qualifications simply count for nothing.

The way I see it is the same as you. UNESCO heritage, thus see a sudden need to glamourised, preserve and promote being a hawker. The fact is that the best and most authentic hawker fare are born from the streets, not from some culinary school or institutions. It doesn't mean that if one graduate with a hawkerpreneurship diploma, the market will simply accept his bak chor mee at $10 a bowl, instead of the usual $4.

Then on the other hand, we have the G getting in private organisations such as Timbre, NTUC, Koufu, Kopitiam, Fei Siong to run hawker centres thinly disguised as social enterprises. Pay rent per stall at $4k to these organisations vs $2k from NEA. Still thinking that locals will take it up hook, line and sinker? Get real man.

Certainly valid points.

I don't think that reviving the trade with the younger generation by making a course in poly and ITE is the solution.

Actually I am thinking, why limit to poly and ite grad? Why not expend to anyone who is keen to be hawker owner? Like maybe someone only has O level, can also apply what as long as the person is very interested to want to make it work. Recently there is news reported that this year O level result is not bad for many of those in jail taking O level. So long as these people are willing to work hard and given a second chance. So why not also open up to all people including those who had went to jail before. Maybe the most the criteria is to have basic proffency in English lor. It's cook good food, what is there got to do with diploma in say business admin? What is there got to do with say ITE cert? In fact these cert is totally not related to cook good food right?

Basically what government want to go for? To ensure hakwer centre will continue to have owners taking over those who retire? In that case why limit to only poly and it grad for HDP? Why? If thinking that now is everything also need education in order to work, so need to rise the bar now to mimimum to have ite to cook good food at hawker centre? If that's the case, it just make no sense, coz good education does not mean the person can cook good food, it does not mean this person can tahan working in hawker centre environment. So again why cast the net so narrow? Why?

Hope government to realised that we need to take a step back and not neglect what is the fundamentals. The fundamentals for hawker centre owners is not about to have ite cert, not poly cert. In fact to be hawker centre owners can be anyone including those who had went to jail before. It is as long as they are interested in and want to make it work and of coz if can cook good food is a good bonus. So we should not keep thinking, future = 100% cert in everything. Like that gg.. Coz ultimately there will always have jobs that actually do not require any cert, and then why still follow the trend for requirements to have cert then can work blindly? What is the achievement for that? In fact it does not achieve anything except casting the net narrower.

i feel maybe they cannot create enough those so call ' good job' or 9-5 office job for our grad and dip holder?? they want show and make it seem that being a hawker is the same level a underwriter?? ( for example)

who knows maybe we could have course in poly and 'U' to become a taxi driver or a grab driver in the near future

Probably the course require the student to do extensive research of the culinary history, chemical composition of the various food and sauces. Plus able to write a thesis on the food that they would be preparing to sell. Student should also be mathematical proficient in financial profit and loss statements including statistics to know what food ppl want.
