Thai study finds 2 doses of Sinovac can’t beat Delta variant, AstraZeneca can

Inoculation with two doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine can boost the neutralizing antibody level to 80-90% and provide immunity to the Alpha variant of the COVID-19 virus to some extent, but cannot fend off the highly contagious Delta variant, which is becoming dominant in Thailand and many other parts of the world, said a prominent Thai doctor today (Friday).

Two doses of the UK’s Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine can, however, immunize people, with neutralizing antibody levels of over 90%, against the virulent Delta variant, according to Head of the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Centre, Professor Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, who conducted a joint study with Dr. Anan Jongkaewwattana, a virologist at BIOTEC.

The study reveals that two doses of Sinovac, plus a booster dose of AstraZeneca, can prevent the Delta infection better than two doses of Sinovac, but still less than two doses of AstraZeneca, the doctor said.

Twincharged

The trouble our editors goes through to help our readers understand is often under appreciated.

Little knowledge / incomplete understanding of scientific terms can be extremely detrimental.

We are still figuring out the following:

1. Sinovac not recognized for National Vaccination Program because data insufficient BUT allowed to be used.

2. Sinovac requires payment regardless even if you are Singaporean but now we are rolling out the National Program vaccinations free for Singaporean / Foreigner / It.

3. Those vaccinated with Sinovac will be considered as if "not vaccinated" when restrictions are lifted.

Give me some time and we will get to the bottom of this.

BANGKOK: Thailand's health ministry said on Sunday (Jul 11) more than 600 medical workers who received two doses of China's Sinovac vaccine have been infected with COVID-19, as authorities weigh giving booster doses to raise immunity.

Of the 677,348 medical personnel who received two doses of Sinovac, 618 became infected, health ministry data from April to July showed. A nurse has died and another medical worker is in critical condition.

Well-Loved Samut Sakhon Doctor Loses His Battle Against Covid-19

On Monday, Facebook user Ratirat Rotthong wrote about the death of Dr Phicheat Sahakij, who worked at Suang Luang Hospital in Samut Sakhon’s Krathum Baen district.

“Phicheat or Dr Neung died from Covid-19 on July 10,” she said. “He was among the frontline medics who helped treat patients in Samut Sakhon when the latest outbreak first emerged.”

She also pointed out that the doctor had received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine along with other frontline medical personnel.

Ratirat’s post attracted more than 1,000 comments, including condolences and praise for the bravery of frontline medics who risk their lives in the battle against the virus.

Samut Sakhon governor Weerasak Wichitsaensri also said in a Facebook post on Sunday that he had attended the doctor’s funeral and that Dr Neung will be missed by all.

“The Covid-19 situation in the province is still critical, but we will never give up,” he said. “The province is building more field hospitals and community isolation centres to curb infections.”

Samut Sakhon reported 591 new infections on Monday, coming in second after Bangkok. Since April 1, when the third wave was sparked in Bangkok’s high-end entertainment district, Samut Sakhon has reported 13,209 cases.

On Sunday, the Department of Disease Control reported that 880 medics have contracted Covid-19 and seven have died despite being inoculated against the disease.

Thai fed-up doctors demand pfizer, don't trust sinovac

  • Thailand’s ‘Fed-up Doctors’ group is demanding the country switch to mRNA vaccines amid reports that even medics double vaccinated with the Chinese-made jab are being infected with the Delta variant of the coronavirus

  • Health care workers have been angered by a leaked memo showing experts fear giving doctors Pfizer jabs donated by the United States could undermine confidence in Sinovac

  • What has angered her, however, is the news that she and her fellow frontline medical workers will not be considered a priority group to receive the Pfizer vaccine when the United States donates 1.5 million doses later this month and a further 20 million ordered by the government for the fourth quarter.

  • Earlier this month a leaked memo, the contents of which have since been confirmed by Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, revealed that a panel of medical experts had cautioned against giving the US-manufactured jab to frontline doctors on the grounds that doing so would undermine the public’s confidence in the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine. The Sinovac jab has until now been used for the majority of the country’s inoculations but recent reports have questioned its efficacy against the Delta variant, leading to public scepticism.

  • “If we give [Pfizer jabs] to the [frontline medical workers] it would mean we accept that Sinovac cannot prevent [the Delta variant], which would make it harder for us to find excuses for ourselves,” the memo read.
