need special commerical freezer.

They are defrosted for 5 days where they can be stored at refrigerator temperature.

No home freezer can store at -70 deg C. Your normal home freezer is -20/-30 at best.

Covid: Israel vaccine fears 'out of context and inaccurate'

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55734257

No body expects 1 dose to stem/reverse the tide. But the israelis have just shown switching to a strategy where u only give 1 dose first hoping to blunt the epidemic is not going to work (ie UK).

Real world application.

1 dose is not going to cut it. The dangerous "wartime" gamble that UK took with giving many people their 1st doses first WHILE delaying the 2nd dose, is not going to play out well.

Pfizer says its vaccine, produced with BioNTech, is around 52% effective after the first dose, and increases to about 95% a number of days after the second dose.

52% and 95% are good numbers

Over 12,000 People Test Positive for COVID-19 in Israel after Receiving Pfizer Vaccine

In a major blow to the efficacity of Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine, over 12, 400 who have been administered the vaccine have tested positive for the deadly coronavirus disease in Israel. As per reports, there 69 people who had even taken their second jab of the vaccine had also tested positive for the virus.

According to Israel's health ministry, total 1,89,000 people were tested after they received Pfizer's vaccine and 6.6 per cent of the people still tested positive for COVID-19. Israel's vaccination drive began on December 19 wherein the elderly and people with comorbidities were prioritized for the vaccine shots. Health officials said that over a quarter of its citizens have already received the Pfizer Inc. vaccine so far, out of which, nearly 3.5 per cent have already got their second dose.

Earlier, Israel's coronavirus czar Nachman Ash who is the national coordinator on the pandemic had said that Pfizer's vaccine was "less effective than we had thought".

Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said that ever since the rollout of vaccinations began one month ago, the Jewish state had inoculated more than 2.2 million of its nine million inhabitants.

The vaccination drive happens at a time when the country is in its third lockdown with infection rates still high. Since the pandemic began, more than half a million cases have been reported and 4,005 people have died in Israel. The rise in infections, despite the lockdown and vaccinations, has been attributed to virus mutations and disregard by some people of restrictions on assembly.

I thought Pfizer already mentioned getting the vaccine does not mean you won't be infected?

Some reports of adverse events from Pfizer vaccine recorded in Singapore: MOH official

Wong Casandra

·Senior Reporter

Fri, 22 January 2021, 9:38 pm

SINGAPORE — Authorities have received some reports of adverse events arising from a number of people who have received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in Singapore, said a top health official on Friday (22 January).

These reports are in the process of being compiled for submission to the COVID-19 vaccination expert panel for review and recommendations, Ministry of Health (MOH) director of medical services Kenneth Mak said during a virtual COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce press conference.

“As soon as we're able to get those recommendations out and we have organised and categorised these adverse events, we will be then able to publicise and inform you what those adverse events are,” said Associate Professor Mak, who did not provide a figure on the number of such reports.

Prof Mak noted that in countries that have launched vaccination programmes, the majority of adverse events are very mild. These include pain, redness, swelling, and soreness of the muscles after jabs were administered.

“There are some who have reported fatigue, more generalised muscle aches, and fever. Many of these symptoms, in fact, reflect the body's immune system responding to the vaccine dose that has been injected in them, he added.

“And (there) will be some that may have more serious side effects, which include allergic reactions of a variety of different grades of severity.”

In the US, allergic reactions are occurring at a rate of 11.1 per 1 million vaccinations, according to local health officials. By comparison, flu vaccines cause about 1.3 such reactions per million doses administered.

In Singapore, more than 60,000 people have received their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as of Friday, including those working in healthcare, nursing homes, frontline and essential services, and seniors in nursing homes.

Separately, 39 staff at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) have received their second dose of the vaccine. From next Wednesday, some 5,000 to 10,000 senior residents per precinct in Ang Mo Kio and Tanjong Pagar will be able to receive the vaccine under a pilot.

Prof Mak also spoke at length about the process for tracking such adverse events.

“This goes through the institutions which perform the vaccinations, as well as other doctors who may see patients who have had the vaccination, and have had any adverse effects,” he said.

These reports are then sent to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), which has a pharmacovigilance programme in place to receive and process them. Such reports are reviewed by expert panels within the HSA to determine the severity of the adverse events.

Reports will also be sent to the MOH, where experts would be consulted to determine whether authorities need to tweak the list of precautions to be taken for the vaccination exercise, said Prof Mak.

He also said that authorities are “very close” to reaching a decision for a second vaccine pending the HSA’s approval, but did not specify which company would be chosen.

Currently, only the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the HSA for pandemic use here. Two doses are required 21 days apart and it would take up to another two weeks after the second dose for those undergoing vaccination to achieve maximum protection against the virus.

The government has signed advanced purchase agreements with Moderna and Sinovac.

“We anticipate that we would have a decision made soon in our evaluation for one of the vaccines. The other vaccine, I understand, we are still clarifying further details with the company that produces the vaccine,” said Prof Mak.

“We are hopeful that if we are able to get all the information necessary for evaluation, then the HSA can complete its review process and give approval for the other vaccines as well.”

At the press conference, Health Minister and taskforce co-chair Gan Kim Yong said one scheduled Pfizer-BioNTech shipment has been delayed, and that there may be other delays to the shipments of vaccines due to Pfizer’s upgrading of its European manufacturing plant.

“We will continue to monitor our supplies closely to meet our target of vaccinating all Singaporeans and long-term residents in Singapore by the end of this year. But we will need to calibrate our roll out in tandem with our supplies,” he added.

Effective or not aside, I think the vaccination plans has being well rolled out by our Gov. Just look at other countries hooha on their vaccination plans but progressing slow on the ground.

Again effective or not, it is early stage. Mass vaccination is the only way to improve the statistics required for good understanding of the vaccination. 50% efficacy is better than none where we have seen the full effects of the pandemic at the early onset early last year. At least if there are some local cluster outbreak, we don't have to go into full lock down.

This is the most important statement in the article.

Production and deliveries are definitely going to be an issue. Cos the stocks are being shipped once they are manufactured.

Campaign started 5 weeks ago & so far 45% of Israel population has had their 1st jab - incredible.

If we had the same continuous supply of vaccines available, I don't see why we couldn't accomplish the same speed - we have a completely integrated first class public health medical system as well & even less spread out population.

First indications point to very high level of Pfizer vaccine efficacy in real world scenario...

https://www.straitstimes.com/world/middle-east/israels-early-covid-19-vaccine-data-offers-hope

On Monday, the Israeli Health Ministry and Maccabi released new data on people who had received both doses of the vaccine, showing extremely high rates of effectiveness.

The ministry found that out of 428,000 Israelis who had received their second doses, a week later, only 63, or 0.014 per cent, had contracted the virus. Similarly, the Maccabi data showed that more than a week after having received the second dose, only 20 out of roughly 128,600 people, about 0.01 per cent, had contracted the virus.

Compared to the general CV-19 prevalance (pre-vaccine)...

Leading immunologist Cyrille Cohen told The Times of Israel that among the general population, around 0.65% are infected in a given week.
