Turkish study revises down Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine efficacy to 83.5%

The COVID-19 vaccine developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech has an efficacy of 83.5% based on final results of Phase III trials, Turkish researchers said on Wednesday, a downward revision from a preliminary finding of 91.25%.

The final efficacy rate was based on 41 infections, 32 of which had received a placebo, said Murat Akova, head of the Phase III trials conducted in Turkey.

The rate is based on participants who presented at least one symptom of COVID-19 along with a positive PCR test at least 14 days after the second dose of the vaccine, Akova said.

He added that the vaccine prevented hospitalisation and severe illness in 100% of cases, saying the six people who were hospitalised were all in the placebo group.

“Because there were no important side effects (in the trial)... let alone the fact that this vaccine is being used widely in our country and no side effect was reported, we can say comfortably that it is safe,” said Serhat Unal, member of the government’s advisory Science Council.

Turkey had announced a preliminary result with 29 infections in December, which placed the efficacy at 91.25%. Worldwide trials of the shot, called CoronaVac, have shown wide variations in efficacy rates, leading to some criticism.

The final results in Turkey were based on a 10,216 participants, 6,648 of whom received the vaccine as part of the Phase III study that began mid-September, said Unal.

Males made up 58% of participants, who were all between the ages of 18 and 59, Unal said, adding that the two doses were delivered 14 days apart, compared to 28 days in the nationwide rollout.

Soon after the release of preliminary results, CoronaVac received emergency approval from Turkish authorities.

Turkey has already administered 9.32 million doses of CoronaVac across the country in a campaign which began in mid-January. More than 2 million people have received two doses.

I read Hk health authority claimed that old men didn't have his breakfast before vaccination.

I fell off my chair when reading that reply. Haha

Hence it's critical to target the suppliers with the highest efficacy.

Innoculating the population with a less efficacious vaccine simply puts us further away from our herd immunity objective.

These modern mRNA vaccines appear to perform impressingly well.

Once again, NZ makes the smart move...

New Zealand to buy enough Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for entire population

"Ardern said the decision to make Pfizer the country's primary vaccine provider was taken after it was shown to be about 95 per cent effective at preventing symptomatic infection."

New cluster hits HK gyms, schools, banks

Demand for Chinese vaccine falls amid reports of side effects

Fewer Hong Kong residents are showing up to get vaccines from Chinese maker Sinovac Biotech amid reports of side effects, even as demand was strong for Pfizer-BioNTech's shots on the day of their debut.

The percentage of people who had their scheduled Sinovac shots at community vaccination centres fell to 72 per cent on Wednesday, down from a high of more than 90 per cent last week.

The skipping of Sinovac vaccine appointments comes after the city reported three deaths and three critical illnesses among the over 130,000 people inoculated to date.

While none has been linked to the Sinovac vaccine, hesitancy around getting the shots has risen among residents.

The authorities preliminarily ruled out a tie between the vaccines and the first two deaths and two critical cases, while they are still analysing the more recent reports.

Possible scenarios:

Vaccine diplomacy - HSA may be pressured to approve SinoVac.

People are not allowed to choose vaccine brand.

But if they find out (or rumoured) that certain place and time, get SinoVac which they heard is 50% vs the 90% efficacy ones, they may reject or not turn up for their appt.

Gahmen can't allow this, if they want everyone to be vaccinated.

So gahmen have to mix and match, some time this, some time that. :D

Gonna be messy.

Maybe spin the wheel and see if the wheel got S or P or M?

:D

The situation doesn't look good. This is HK where news leaked out more easily than interior mainland. If HK has to resort to overseas vaccine, China will not be happy.

The simplified process, effective from Monday (Mar 15), resumes pre-pandemic application requirements. It will be available only to applicants and their family members inoculated with Chinese-produced vaccines.
