Car COE extensions plunge by 50% - Fall for first time in a decade could mean bigger COE supplies ahead

The number of car certificate of entitlement (COE) revalidations - which form the bulk of total COE extensions - has fallen for the first time in a decade, and this could mean bigger COE supplies ahead.

According to fresh statistics from the Land Transport Authority, the figure plunged by more than 50 per cent to 20,071 in 2020 - from 2019's record of 41,777.

Lol lousy journalism.

COE quota also plunged from 2009 to 2010 (ie. 10 years ago), so naturally, the number of cars needing COE renewal also plunged in 2020 as compared to 2019.

What the journalist should compare is the change in percentage of renewal out of total number of cars with expiring COE.....

Yup stupid headline totally misleading... "Fall for first time in a decade could mean bigger COE supplies ahead" is nonsensical when actually reading the article:

Quote

Mr Ron Lim, head of sales and marketing at Nissan agent Tan Chong Motor, also reckoned the fall in revalidations was linked to the far fewer new registrations in 2010. He noted that in absolute terms, car COE revalidations last year were still higher than at any time before 2016.

"The revalidation rate remains at almost 59 per cent of vehicles which were due for scrap in 2020," he added. The corresponding percentage figure for 2019 was 66 per cent.

Nanyang Business School adjunct associate professor Zafar Momin concurred, pointing out that the pool of cars between nine and 10 years old last year was 45 per cent lower than in 2019. Like Mr Lim, he said that among cars in this pool, COE revalidations accounted for a significant portion.
