Last time when the birth rates were higher, there were  many primary and secondary schools.   2 universities were sufficient.

Now, the birth rates are lower.  Primary, secondary schools and JC need to be merged.  But we opened 1 universities after another.  We now have 5 universities.

With so few people progressing from primary/secondary schools, why we need so many universities har?

I don't think humans in general are getting smarter.  Just look at all the brainless ones on our roads!

More uni's were built, so just to fill them up means more will go to uni.

Able to study does not mean that street smart.

Street smart does not mean can study.

Economics bro....

Why Australia focus so much on Tertiary education....?

It's where the $$$$ comes...

Export education.... meant oversea students need to spend big bucks in the country... It helps to boost education industry, boost property, boost F&B etc....

I do think this is the right direction forward; as Elon Musk says, ultimately his job candidate need to demonstrate exceptionality.  Going to uni is no longer a hallmark of exceptionality and that’s probably the right direction.

Better think how your kids can acquire and demonstrate exceptionality.

This is true, going down the road, now almost all students can get some kind of "degree" - and already we see stratification in the local scene. Hearsay also that the assessments are not so rigorous now, but honestly what really matters is the substance / person behind it, isn't it?

All big boss like to talk like Elon Musk; I also tell my subordinates same thing every year when come to bonus time [laugh] to convey the upper management's message. But seriously even if everyone performs "exceptionally", then there is no exception already right? Even if everyone is super-performer, they will still be compared to one another. And someone has to take the short end of the stick.

It's a means for generating revenue. Just like how big-name foreign universities in western countries rely a lot on asian students' tuition fees to fund their operations.
