Given Taiwan's previous success at controlling its outbreak, perhaps these variants are just much harder to control than the original virus strains.

I'm putting this out there because so much of the discussion about the situation in India seems to be focused on derision about their mishandling of the pandemic rather than this new crop being fundamentally tougher to control. Of course India (and I guess Taiwan and every other country) could've done better (and a lot of it may be complacency or "fatigue" linked), but maybe the job is getting tougher.

BJ and his chief medical officer said yesterday that Indian variant seems more infectious than B117 Kent variant (which is already substantially more infective than the earlier strains).

And since we switched to 21 days shn plus more pcr testing, it seems harder to diagnose at least.

There were many discussion and report why TW landed this way. Mainly how thye handle flight from India. Somehow when virus was first reported from Wuhan,  they took very drastic steps to ensure it will not spread into TW. However, like singapore, we happily received flights from India.

i believe they lack test kits....

They have no lack of test kits. According to a doc friend working there as visiting consultant, the low level of test is mostly cos of very stringent criteria set by gov before test can be conducted. Otherwise the gov will not reimburse cost of test and hospital will have to foot the bill.

According to that same friend of mine, the more worrying thing for Taiwan is their very stressed public healthcare system. Many of those working in public hospitals have been working without a rest days for over 2-3 weeks.

Huh, so many people in ICU?

Hopefully they can overcome this.

Then they will be slow to react then. Lag time to catching the borders of the cluster. Singapore just throw money at the problem. Been spending millions everyday doing swabs for all the ARIs. So at least for symptomatic cases. The pickup is much faster.

Not sure how much tw govt develop stuff like TT or safe entry. But if want to be covid zero type of nation, definitely need such resources (much as I dislike the invasion of privacy).

Heard from TW friends that there isn't a centralise contact tracing system. Some malls, etc will as ppl to scan QR code, enter their details, etc before entry. Some just need ppl to write down their details on papers. While others may not need  any sort of recording at all.

Agree. Guess this wave in TW really caught them by surprise and they have more time than anyone else to prepare for it.

Think they just need to be more selective on who goes into ICU and try to free up other wards for those who less need it. Really hope they can overcome this.

Taiwanese can be more kiasi than singaporean....they do not need a lockdown or circuit breaker.....ppl just stay at home on their own.
