In contrast to the response I received this morning

Doesn't mean all the TW people stop going to office or schools at the drop of a hat. They probably also given 2-3 days for the full restriction in schools and workplace and to settle last-minute matters. Just that those people who have no business out in the streets or going anywhere, will stay home.

civic conscious doesnt equate to controlling spread. If so, then surely japan would have no problem?

For better or worse, our more subservient sheep-like behaviour with strong nanny state control is more likely to bear results.

Anyway I'm sure the taiwanese will get it under control. but it's obvious they are not catching the edges of the clusters. This is a catch up game for them for the next several weeks for sure. NOT that we are better off. But it's easier for us to contact trace and quarantine people faster.

TW and Japan still allow all the tea-house, pub and ktv to operate [laugh]  Might be this is their achilles heel.

Taipei and New Taipei District has no lockdown.  Unlike our almost lockdown

because they politicize everything. Firstly, they don't want any vaccines from China. They went into an extreme position until they refused to buy a vaccine from China's distributor of Pfizer vaccine. The distributorship of Pfizer vaccine in the greater china region belongs to Fosun, a Chinese pharmaceutical company. Then, the US has banned most of the export of the Moderna vaccine.  This left them with the worst vaccine available-Astrazeneca. Even with the Astrazeneca, they are too late in the procurement and only managed to get 300,000 doses so far.

I just watched the press conference by President Cai. She still tried the placate the Taiwanese by mentioning the usage of Made-in-Taiwan vaccine, which is scheduled to complete its phase 2 trial this coming June. Taiwanese are screwed.

hearsay 800 cases

Pretty sure they can easily hit that number if their testing capability can be increased significantly. I heard currently, they have around 4-5 testing centres, each can only do 100-200 test each day. They are only testing in those high risk area in Taipei and New Taipei.

Heard they got it thru S.Korea who decided not to use AZ and sold some to Taiwan.

They are really caught by surprise this time round and didn't spend last year preparing for the worse. They ran out bed after just the 2nd day of a larger outbreak and they need time to convert some wards or temp facilities for ppl with COVID but with mild or no symptom. Meanwhile, those who are tested positive but have mild or no symptom are told to stay at home to monitor and wait for further notice.
