The new MIJ Corolla Hybrid i think makes a nice PHV car! Cheaper than prius and looks more swee! But it's still too new so the second hand ones below $80k all still the older axio...

https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/listing.php?ORD=PRC_ASC&MOD=corolla hybrid&RPG=20&VEH=0&RGD=&AVL=2

the old axio is a good workhorse IMO but not many left on the road nowadays since its PI only car.

MIJ altis hybrid quite ex le. Not many people buy even for private owner.

Because the one direct PI from Japan is the 4.4m one similar in length to Axio.

If someone were to buy one, he would be better off PI it from Aussie since it's the same dimensions as the usual Corolla Altis just that the face is different.

And boxer engines too rough and noisy...

No eh I find mine to be smooth but still definitely a little noisy as compared to non boxers.

On that point, I find Toyota engines noisy compared to those of Hyundai (does anyone know why?)

For phv confirm GG.

One of the cars quoted at the front was the forester XT...the petrol consumption of that is 😭 (but still it's because it's powerful and you cannot compare a 2.0T to 2.0L NA or even with a 1.5L NA)

Oh yeah another way to weed out ex-PHV cars is to buy a car that has been fully serviced at the AD with full servicing records. After verification with AD, you can be assured the car's odometer hasnt been tempered with, and is therefore unlikely to be an ex-PHV car.

I chose some low mileage and newish cars as examples:

https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=957087&DL=2954

https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=975736&DL=1238

https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=986813&DL=1095 (must check if serviced by AD as not stated in ad)

https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info.php?ID=998602&DL=3049 (must check if serviced by AD as not stated in ad)

And although i dont recommend it:

Yeah  people associate toyota corolla with reliability and comfortable ride, thats why corolla has been the best selling car worldwide for many years😄, not in sg though thanks to stupid COE scheme and gahmen taxes which inflate all our car prices🤬

But the 'stupid COE scheme and gahmen taxes' affect all cars so all things remaining equal toyota should still be the best selling car no?

To be honest i feel toyota has never been the most innovative nor exciting kind of car. It's forte is supposed to be reliability but even now those made in Thailand cars are not really there. Compared to the vios for eg, the equivalent pricing vezels, elantras, ceratos are all a better drive, look better inside and outside and are made in japan/Korea.

Toyota interiors are plasticky and feel like those 90s taxis(remember the 2010 altis had fake shiny wood inserts and a fake wooden shiny steering wheel vs say the civic with faux stitched leather interior) and exterior either dated or copied (altis front wide grille looks like civic's imo).

So Yea there's a reason why Toyota is losing its dominance. My two cents only! I mean, I drive a cheap conti so people could point to things like unreliable gb.. Frequent and expensive maintenance (tho it hasn't happened yet fingers crossed) 😅

Agreed wholeheartedly! So few Vios on the road these days, but then people still buying the Altis like nobody's business!

I own a newish Vios and its interior is like 10-20 years ago stuff. Simple engineering like making the side air con work also the totoya engineers or thai plant cant do properly. Esp for the lower E grade Vios, almost every gauge, knob and dial is analogue. Which actually makes it ideal for heavy use cause less techy, electronic wizardry to spoil. Just take a look at the avante and mazda 3 forum threads and fb groups, every now and there's a query about dashboard light show, side mirror spoil, battery flat etc etc.

But for personal use, well i cant wait for the 2 year loan lock in period to swap it out for the new k3 or avante or whatever swee swee looking car that comes along the way then =D

Are you sure AD allow you to check the mileage even before you are the owner and planning to buy the car?

Exactly wat I always been saying.

And to make things worse,  BM bring in the Thailand or Indonesia model n overpriced those cars.

Glad to see other car makers putting in effort to improve the technology n features.

Wait till 2030, assuming most cars r EV. And Toyota still remain the old fashion outdated technology n design, I want to see how they compete with the companies like Telsa n Apple.

And why would you not recommend the Vezel Hybrid? What did you see?

Ok let's get do some simple maths here instead of tikam tikam ask heshe to buy Attrage, Megane RS, new Cerato, etc

80k budget, 4yr old car

Assuming TS is looking at driving something less miserable w an average OMV of $20k

Parf would be $10k so depre over 6 yrs would be ard $11.6k/yr

Lots of choices w that budget. Need not resort to ex-PHV cars

TS, can get a S60.

If you need to put stroller...

Meant need child seat too.

Suggest get a SUV.

Easier to chuck stuff in the boot, higher drivng position and view of road. Definitely wider than most sedans for baby seat.

Buy something that's proven or highly recommended for safety...

Don't go for tin cans. (small entry Japanese make)

Korean makes are supposedly tougher.

A few conti make also know for safety.

It's your call if you fancy saving money on fuel on some very light cars...or something sturdier.

People like Toyota because it is reliable and cheaper to repair. Reliable because Toyota   cars  are so simple that nothing much would possibly breakdown except for the mechanical wear and tear. And when any breakdown , parts are readily  available because there are enough stockists carrying the parts. Because of the critical mass, parts are also cheaper . That also explains why the parts and repair cost of the non mainstream cars are more expensive.

It seems that when some people think about Toyota, all they see/know is the Vios, and seeing how rudimentary the model is, start using a broadsword to chop the entire brand down. Or maybe confuse the sales/marketing/pricing actions of BM with the brand itself.

The Vios is an Asean model designed for the tougher road conditions of the SEA, where toughness, reliability and low costs of maintenance is paramount. It is just unfortunate Singapore falls into the same market group.

Yes, much of the success gained by Toyota is down to its reliability and durability, but that didn't come by accident. That was through decades of sound engineering and precise manufacturing. Old fashioned? They also popularised hybrid tech single-handedly in 1997 and now other car companies are playing catch up. Maybe they would do the same with Mirai and FCEV just as they did with Prius. How about Toyota Safety Sense which they introduced on all mainstream cars years back? Or the VVT-iW (combining Otto+Atkinson cycle) tech on the Camry?

Take a quick read into how the GR Yaris was born: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/toyota-gr-yaris-how-britains-best-affordable-drivers-car-was-born

It is amazing how company president Akio Toyoda got involved in every step of the development of this remarkable car. It speaks alot about the determination of the company to turn its reputation around, from a maker of sensible but staid and boring cars to one that brings driving fun and enjoyment to the car market.

For clarifications, I am not a TS. Just a keen car enthusiast.

And why would you not recommend the Vezel Hybrid? What did you see?

Let me try to summarise my opinions:

1. The Vezel (Hybrid or not) likely to be an ex-PHV car, so unless TS is an experienced car buyer, he may get one with tampered mileage and end up with a big repair bill

2. Even if he gets a non PHV car, I'd argue (based on my chit chat with many PHV Vezel drivers, an employee working with lion city rentals and a close friend working as a used car salesman) that it's just as hardy a car as a previous gen Vios/Altis. [I infer that TS will be clocking lots of kilometers daily as he has an eye on FC]

3. I'd argue that the Vezel Hybrid being a PI car, recalls are often neglected. The circulation of a few of them catching fire could be due to this? Somehow I see less prius/CHR hybrids catching fire, so maybe it's a battery issue? Not sure whats the reason but i'd avoid a car that has it's cousins being so prone to immolating...

4. A less significant point would be how the car is rather rattle-y, "lok-kok" in local slang, after being driven for a while. I noticed it and the people (in point 2) i have spoken to seem to agree with this.

This also looks good ah since apparently fully serviced by AD!

Oh yeah, another big point of consideration would be the safety features. The Vios doesnt have any on any of the trims. Not sure if the Cerato or City has it... Too many siao lang these days who brake check, suddenly change lane or come to a complete stop on the right lane.

Ok, good points, so its about the car model itself, and not that actual car in the ads.

Its just that I saw that its a HRV from KM, and the interior looks quite well-maintained, so I thought there is something that I missed seeing.
