The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is switching firearms by replacing the fuss-free and trusty Taurus M85 revolver with the Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol that packs more heat.

SPF confirmed on June 22, 2021 its frontline officers will be using the new weapon soon.

The Taurus revolver has been issued to frontliners for the past 19 years.

News of the replacement is not new and has been reported since 2017.

But the swap is now confirmed.

SPF said on its website that officers have been progressively trained to use service pistols due to the "heightened security climate".

This has been ongoing since 2017.

All frontline regulars will be trained to operate the Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol by the end of 2023, according to the SPF.

More rounds

One functional different between the two handguns is that the pistol can hold more bullets than the revolver.

This would have a bearing on its intended use.

SPF added on Tuesday that the Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol can be loaded with three times more rounds compared to the Taurus M85 revolver.

SPF said: "This reduces reloading time, improves firepower and further augments the SPF's ability to engage armed attackers in dealing with security threats."

In 2017, The Firearm Blog wrote that Glock will supply 6,000 new pistols to the SPF.

Revolver has sufficed for two decades

The Brazilian-made Taurus M85 revolver has been in use since 2002.

Before that, the SPF was using the Smith & Wesson revolver.

The Taurus M85 revolver can hold five rounds, and has a speed loader to reload the weapon faster and with less effort.

It is intended to be used on targets nearer than 5m.

A revolver is easier to operate as it can be fired the moment the bullets are loaded.

Pistol has more rounds but requires racking

While a revolver has a revolving cylinder, a pistol loads rounds via a removable magazine.

The Glock 19 Gen 5 9mm pistol's magazine has a standard capacity of 15 rounds.

However, a pistol involves racking the slide before firing, which is an extra step that can be cumbersome during high-stress situations.

Racking the slide ensures the round is loading into the chamber of the pistol.

Racking the slide when the round is already loaded results in the unused round being ejected.

The pistol can be used with different grip methods, SPF also said on its website.

A safety mechanism on the pistol prevents accidental misfiring.

It's about time. in a panic situation, all 5 rounds of a revolver can be discharged in 2 seconds, then you are a sitting duck while you reload.

The problem is maintenance to ensure the guns work when needed. The previous S&W is reliable, but the Taurus can jam every now and then. The pistol is more complicated still.

Maybe upgrade taser to a bigger battery capacity.

Even aunty found it to be a joke.

They should work with nerf actually. Then they can always draw their guns out.

Yah. got so many moving parts to remove and clean. Now the police will be not free liao. Need to sit at aircon room (dust-free) and clean piston.

hahaha.

long due for an upgrade.

but i dun think firepower should be key. even 5 round is more then enough for our police.

the fully loaded weight. and the bulkiness of carrying them around and chasing ppl.

and most importantly if during a struggle , some 1 else grab their gun, can the bad guy fire off easily?

the pistol win over the revolver in this instant.

There are pros to using a revolver too. You can draw and immediately fire the weapon which is important in a split second situation, without the need to cock it or fiddle with safe switch. Also, revolvers are simple and easier to maintain.

Not sure how much smaller and lighter the pistol. Revolver snatching used to be a problem until they switched to a snatch-resistant holster.

saw some police with  sub machine gun think MP5? Not sure exactly what gun but they were patrolling in groups and were wearing Kevlar vests with red berets. Maybe normal police should be issued MP5 as well?😅

I think the revolver is meant to disable or wound whoever the police is dealing with rather than wanting it to be lethal to take down an individual. That was probably the reason why the spf took so long to update the side arm. The revolver is limited by its very short range compared to the pistol. The modern pistol like the Glock most likely has a better range and lethality. But then pistol rounds are designed to wound and not to kill. Even the MP4/5 uses pistol rounds. Unlike the rounds we used for the assault rifle during our NS that is designed to kill.

Our citizens are not armed or are they hardcore criminals so police officers dont really need to be armed to the teeth.

Yes exactly. Our round are make for short distance accuracy like 5m only.

Strong stopping power. But low penaration power

I will suggest the first round inside the pistol to be a dummy rounds. If the bad guy snatch the guy, release the safety catch, clock the gun liao, and fire, at least first round is a blank round the policeman have enough time to fight back.

I think our govt very kiasu one. Buy pistol sure will buy this too.

Then our Taurus Pistol will be donated to our cisco aux police? 🤣

If they change to pistol dun need dummy round.  Cos its will be extremely hard for an untrain person to get his hand on 1 and figure out how to clock and fire straight away.

I dun think the police will patrol with 1 round in the chamber.

Even last time use revolver they dun do that

Side-track abit.

Singapore is a relatively safe country.  We seldom hear of policemen having to discharge firearms.

Tasers, maybe.

Oftentimes in the news, we hear of policemen and cisco officers using the issued guns to commit suicide.

But I do agree that a pistol would be more helpful in times of emergency  when fighting crimes.

Why armed our policemen with Glock 19 of 15 rounds where we hardly use them. Already very nervous to handle 10 rounds when returning arm and now with 15 rounds. One missing round will subject to various questioning ..... :slow:
