really .... how long to pump out and dry out the electricals..... in deep trouble...

Well if it's just a one-in-a-thousand-year flood like they say, then maybe it's ok. [laugh]  They should be able to operate as-is and get obsoleted before the next big one.

Since we are talking about dams. Pressure on water resource is how u can hold your neighbours hostage.
Especially where river systems make up a big portion of the local economy/livelihoods, water supply.

It's good that malaysia/SG is not dependent on the Mekong.

This is a big stick that China is holding over cambodia/Laos/India and Thailand to some extent.

i saw some stats that the bramaputra river on the chinese side contributes about 80mil m3 of water while the valley side on the india side contribute 230mil m3 of water iirc.

so the dam will still release water not like all the water disappear. 25% of the total river flow is throttled

Think it ends up self sustaining. Build more dams cos u have lot of companies specialised in hydroengineering and need them to maintain your lead in the field (also cos your own leader sibei suka dua dua dams).

Ownself create ownself demand. Double edged sword.

Just like the mindless roads or bridges to nowhere that Japan builds.

speaking of mindless roads and bridges to nowhere. china also building houses to house no-one. but dont know how much is spent and how much will be useful.

even the high speed rail many lines not profitable.. but people benefit ok. or for security reasons. but if a full capitalistic system, the cows will come back to roost

houses no real ecological damage other than wasting land. And certainly it's bad if it's arable land.
Dams certainly can. Or impact lot of people living downstream in good and bad ways.

It is not about high or low floor, more importantly for Singapore, you need to know the Minimum Platform Level of your house/flat.

i think part of the plan is to urbanise the population, free up land for mass agriculture. right now because they distributed land in the commie system, all the land became household plots.

so to mechanise and economy of scale is not possible. so there is efforts to collectivise the land and other reforms. they know this problem very well.

dams do take away fertile valleys. but big picture is more hydro less coal.

it is interesting to watch developments.. in sgp, things stable.. good. but who knows. very little development. last one was hyflux.. and many got burnt.

That is referring to modern day meteorological measurement since the forming of the PRC in 1947. That said, mankind since the ancient times from the Chinese, Egyptians or Babylonians had been recording and forecasting weather for thousands of years, which u sounded rather surprise in the earlier comment.

Yes, I suppose the hourly rainfall record that is relevant for predicting storm surge floods is possible only with modern day meteorological measurement.  Hence the Henan official's statement that this was the highest rainfall in 1000 years should have been accompanied by a disclaimer that the '1000 years flood' is actually an extrapolation and not from hard records.
