A mother's love...

China floods: Henan mother dies after saving baby from mudslide

Rescuers in China say a woman who flung her baby to safety, just as a mudslide and floods hit their home, has died.

The baby girl was pulled out alive on Wednesday after more than 24 hours buried under rubble.

Reports said heavy rains had triggered the landslide at Wangzongdian village in Henan province.

The region has seen massive floods because of record rainfall, with at least 51 dead and nearly 400,000 people evacuated from their homes.

Footage of rescue workers saving the baby has gone viral in China. She is believed to be around three or four months old.

"I heard the baby's voice, and at that moment the rescuers had just arrived and managed to save the child. She had been flung to a higher spot by her mother," one family member identified as Mr Zhao told Southern Metropolis Daily.

The baby was rushed to hospital and found to be unharmed.

Her mother's body was only found on Thursday. Rescuers told Beijing Youth Daily that when they discovered her body, it was frozen in a position that seemed like she was lifting something up.

"Just at that crucial moment she had lifted up her child, and that's why the baby girl lived," one rescue worker called Mr Yang told reporters.

Local reports did not name the mother or the child.

The rain and floods have wreaked chaos across the province in the last week. Major roads have been turned into rivers, with cars, debris and even people swept along by fast-moving currents.

In the provincial capital of Zhengzhou, at least 12 people died when floodwaters inundated an underground subway line on Tuesday night.

京广路 tunnel totally flooded within 5 mins, with many cars stuck inside     https://twitter.com/badiucao/status/1418284713274314752

Death toll cover up again.

Now they deploy police to stop people from looking down into the tunnel to see what has really happened:

https://twitter.com/SSSFFFCC/status/1418421717169582080

police to block and prevent "kaypohs" or even "family members" to go inside the tunnel or accident area is the right thing to do while the recovery is in progress ...

anyone can call it a cover up ... but whether local govt or authority maintain 100% transparency eventually ... that's a different question [sly]

Nowadays, we have Freak Weather.

The question is Do we have an early warning system?

In the case of Zhengzhou, its MET had announced a possible downpour on Weibo.

It seems like the information did not flow through the chain.

A lot of people bo chap attitude one - they think it will never happen to them. In China and everywhere else. Here too. Like tell them illegal PMDs can catch fire. Nah, will never happen to me.  Or in US tell them hurricane coming, some also insist in staying back.

Is there any form of early warning system?
If yes, why MRT is still running? Why tunnel is still open?
In US, a lot of home has underground bunker for hurricane.

Most of our MRT has sufficient water barriers barring freak weather.

I wonder why the weather forecast did not issue a warning.  That will stop any MRT service.

Did they check if the pumps are working?

Maybe now work from home so do remote inspections and remotely sign off on it.

Seems like no one anticipated the speed and severity of the flash flooding. Or got but neglected liao. If don't drill, even got procedure, also kar lang ka bor

Is there a city command center for such stuff.

We also got early warning system... but haha when was the last time anyone paid any attention.
Maybe in JP where the earthquake alarm people believe. [laugh]

This should be a lesson for us to learn from.

Japan has annual Tsunami Drill.

Weather forecast unable to tell? Or the authority have underestimated the extent of the problem as they have never experience this before?

Weather forecast 200mm (i can't rem exact number) of rain which is almost equivalent to its annual rainfall.
