59 CASES IN NORTH COAST LODGE DORMITORY

Singapore reported 94 new locally transmitted COVID-19 infections as of noon on Monday, including 59 cases linked to North Coast Lodge dormitory in Woodlands. The dormitory cases were detected through testing operations conducted from Saturday after three residents tested positive for COVID-19 during rostered routine testing that day, said MOH.

"So far, about 2,200 workers have been swabbed, and testing for the rest of the 3,200 residents is ongoing," said MOH.

"As a precautionary measure, all residents at the dormitory have been placed on movement restriction order. The confirmed cases are mostly asymptomatic or have mild symptoms."

Yes, but curious why Germany?

Several reasons.

- Germany is Europe's most populous country. (ex- Russia, tie w/Turkey)

- Singapore  generally "trust" Germany, in terms of reporting, control + maintaining protocol & regulations. Their healthcare system seem to have a very detailed approach to managing COVID. The goverment(s) use tracing, vaccine passports etc.

- Singapore previously had formal Reciprocal Green Lane arrangement w/Germany & even relaxed quarantine restrictions with Germany during certain periods in 2020 (home quarantine)

- Of the top 5 largest countries in W Europe, Germany easily have the lowest COVID fatality incidence. Germany always had better control w/COVID compared to the carnage in UK, Italy etc.

- Risk balancing: Other European countries have (well, had) more inbound traffic to Singapore, so they're starting cautiously in the middle w/Germany.

- Large industrial partners in Germany.

- Until a few weeks ago, infection rate in Germany was quite low, around 1,000 cases/day. (population: 84m) - lower incidence than Singapore currently.

In short, if they can't make it work w/Germany, they probably can't make it work with anyone.

So a decent test case.
