Two doses of Pfizer, AstraZeneca shots effective against Delta variant, study finds

LONDON (Reuters) - Two doses of Pfizer or AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine are nearly as effective against the highly transmissible Delta coronavirus variant as they are against the previously dominant Alpha variant, a study published on Wednesday showed.

Officials say vaccines are highly effective against the Delta variant, now the dominant variant worldwide, though the study reiterated that one shot of the vaccines is not enough for high protection.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, confirms headline findings given by Public Health England in May about the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca, based on real-world data.

Wednesday's study found that two doses of Pfizer's shot was 88% effective at preventing symptomatic disease from the Delta variant, compared to 93.7% against the Alpha variant, broadly the same as previously reported.

Two shots of AstraZeneca vaccine were 67% effective against the Delta variant, up from 60% originally reported, and 74.5% effective against the Alpha variant, compared to an original estimate of 66% effectiveness.

"Only modest differences in vaccine effectiveness were noted with the Delta variant as compared with the Alpha variant after the receipt of two vaccine doses," Public Health England researchers wrote in the study.

Data from Israel has estimated lower effectiveness of Pfizer's shot against symptomatic disease, although protection against severe disease remains high.

PHE had previously said that a first dose of either vaccine was around 33% effective against symptomatic disease from the Delta variant.

The full study published on Wednesday found that one dose of Pfizer's shot was 36% effective, and one dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine was around 30% effective.

"Our finding of reduced effectiveness after the first dose would support efforts to maximise vaccine uptake with two doses among vulnerable groups in the context of circulation of the Delta variant," the authors of the study said.

With 94% we should see alot of less of vacinnated compare to unvaccinated being infected. Delta variant really screw up the eifficacy. Our numbers, for infected fully vax is 412/948~ 43% of the total infected.  That's roughly the percentage of the fully vaccinated in Singapore. Similar data in Israel, where some age group, the fully vax are being infected more than their porpotion of their population.

Can only say it still effective in preventing hospitalisation.

figure10_21jul.png?sfvrsn=13fe1fe6_0

Funny thing is, currently population is about 50:50 between fully vax  and un-vax.

However,  detected infected cases seem to happen far more on those who are fully vax (from the chart above, fully vax is 43%, un-vax is 27%)

So how to explain this?  Un-vax ones are mostly staying at home, but the fully-vax ones are more daring running around?

wow.. is there some research, indication by way of tissue damage etc.. this needs more exploration and reading thanks

There is no definitive conclusion because there is a lack of data for long term covid association with cancer.

There are some speculative articles.

makes sense. although the mechanism for tumor is still not well understood, the physiological effects of covid19 damage gives rise to preconditions for cancers being studied.

im not medical trained so can only glint what little on the surface i can scratch

I also want to repeat that our future generation of 500,000 kids are unvaccinated.

A lot of times, lungs will be scarred.

When that happens, it is irreversible.

I had posted a photo of scarred lung in a different thread.

Was having a chat with friends on WhatsApp on reopening in the event vaccination is proven to be effective at keeping the vaccinated out of hospitals.

1.  Most with families that are and or can be fully vaccinated think we should once overseas data proved that our medical resources won't be overwhelmed and few will die.

2.  Some with families that cannot or don't want to be vaccinated think we should open up much later (similar to Weez911's position).

3. Some want to WFH, so they want status quo. 😂

4. Some want to travel and don't mind reopening with countries with high vaccination rate and low hospitalisation rate.

Tricky for G.
