City folks like us .... I cannot tell you what I'll do. I may or may not swerve. I really don't know. Cos my 25yrs driving experience have not exposed me to wild animals dashing across 😀

My only share of such experience was a chicken ran out of ECP.... during morning hours 

I chose to drive on... It went under the bumper... Can see feathers in the air from my rear view mirror...... 

I didn't have time to react.... 

So it was a split second decision to brace for it... 

Braking is not going to help... 

Swerving will be me hitting lane one divider.

the problem with elephants is their skin is grey and doesn't reflect light at night. Which makes it exceedingly difficult to spot them from far, especially  when travelling at speed. Same issue with buffalo, cows, etc. They do tend to move relatively slowly, so it's possible to spot them if not going much faster than the speed limit. In fact there are people that deliberately drive Gerik highway (Malaysia) in the wee hours to spot elephants. 

IMO it's better and safer for tourists to avoid driving at night on those high-risk roads, or, to drive at a manageable speed if night drive is unavoidable.
