40 years ago China can’t even CKD a car, how did they overtake Proton and Perodua?

Well, China learn from those car manufacturing joint-ventures and siphoned off the technology.

Last few decades China legislated that car makers producing cars in China are required to form joint-ventures with local companies.

Might be they learn the tricks from there on.

In China, many foreign automotive brands have to used joint-venture names like "Shanghai-Volkswagen", "Huacheng BMW", "Chang-an Mazda", "Dongfeng Nissan", "Beijing Hyundai", "Guang-Qi Toyota" etc etc in their ad or marketing.

Well, there are some forced transfers of technology and then some reverse engineering...

Actually malaysia also very good in "reverse engineering" but not by the Proton as manufacturer.........

......... but the A-Gou A-Mao workshop using the half cut from Japan and stuff into the proton chassis.. 😛

Real man car, pure turbo, straight thru exhaust without catalytic converter,  stick gearbox, no air bag or active safety system..

Yes indeed.
They usually bought recon parts from SG and JPN, because of higher quality.
Many Proton Inspira owners make their cars into Mitsubishi Lancers. LOL.

I am more interested in seeing whether brands like XPeng, Neo, Geely, etc will make it on our little shore.

These are Tesla challengers.

Supercharged

This is a realistic review of a typical China car.

Geely Xinyue (星越)L

Uses their own 2.0T engine and DCT gearbox. CMA platform co-developed with Volvo (their subsidiary)

Size is similar to Sorento.

Interior looks similar quality to Volvo XC90.

Infotainment is cutting edge.

Price is only around half of a Merc C class.

This is just one of the many successful Chinese car makers.

I see the Jap/Germans, even the koreans may be hard to compete against these Chinese makers in the next few decades.

Certainly I don't mind buying one if it comes to SG.

You know why? China govt aggressively pump money into the car industry, giving incentives and whatever. M'sia govt aggressively siphoned money from the car industry. That is the difference.

Not really true.. if you watch haier documentary, they took a hardline approach to what they do in terms of quality n stamp out corruption.. they were motivated to make poor quality fridge n pass it along to the “sungei road” type of business model with the in house technician to come to the home “to repair the factory created “ faults.

in a way it was like creating a problem with a view of providing an antidote …

later on the biz was crush because once the QA failed, it’s send to be crush by steam rolller.

of course, the usual buying spree of other companies to jump start the process to prosperity was also easier to penetrate the American market via GE.

so while proton did buy lotus, that about the most they did in terms of bragging rights , of course the tuned by lotus, if at all means anything was like having a gugario designed Hyundai matrix..lol

Lately the x70 by geely while not having a branded badge like a Luxus/infinity equivalent seems like a worthy contender where buyers will gladly fork out the money snd not get ridicule by the buying decision..

Only like the Neo so far.. the Renault EV not half bad. Just that Renault and electrical gremlins seems like a curse ..

40 Years ago..most of the Rolls Royce & Mercedes Benz in China are stolen from Hong Kong, the Big Brands don't even have a Dealer or Service Centre for these Cars...Now..almost every City/Town have Dealers & Service Centre of ALL Major Brands in China.

Turbocharged

Good article!!! As a non-automotive country like Singapore, most car-enthusiasts here don't even know what CKD is - which is prevalent in many countries with proper automotive industry giving jobs to locals.

Simple answer is... malaysia, TAK boleh.

Actually, the joke is Proton is run by China man from China.

None of these companies can be lead by non-indigenous race.

None of u credit our scholars for Sg's own 'car industry'?

Started in 1990 only worth $1

31 years later worth $60,000
