Malaysia boleh!

Porsche buatan Malaya  🙂

[KUALA LUMPUR] German luxury carmaker Porsche will open its first factory outside Europe next year in Malaysia, officials said on Friday, seeking to meet strong demand in the Southeast Asian country.

The manufacturing site in the northern state of Kedah will carry out final assembly of specific models for the local market, the company and Malaysian officials said.

Malaysian Trade Minister Azmin Ali said the move was a "strategic decision by Porsche signifying its commitment to build a long-term presence in" Southeast Asia.

Albrecht Reimold, a board member of the Volkswagen-owned brand, said the new plant, being established in collaboration with a local partner, was a "standalone project and modest in size and capacity".

But he added that "it signals our willingness to learn and adapt to specific local market conditions".

Should be interesting, but many questions abound:

How will the QC be?

Can we get our hands on a cheap Porsche..

Current Malaysian prices:

I'm guessing they will get lower?

Malaysia demand would not justify  them to set up an assembly plant  there, the out put  should  serve the Asia region at least, and likely are the  more popular lower end models.

If Porsche put in place stringent  quality  specs,  there should be no concerns on quality  , it is like iPhone being made in China or Nikon made in TH, this is especially so when the plant is an assembly plant, not a production plant.

The reason of setting up plant here is to defray production  cost to improve profit, i don't think they will sell them much cheaper,  and for SGP, the ARF and COE will kill the price,  don't expect an import car to be cheap.

Will there be PI models?

IMO, there must be significant savings for this..

Or our local AD might take their cars from Kedah too..

Not a bad thing, but looking at Mercedes, none of their Kuantan made cars made it to SG...

It is FOR MALAYSIA only.

I read that if cars are assembled in Malaysia they are not subjected to some import taxes or excise duties and they are sold cheaper than imported ones.

Consumers pay less for cars anfd the assembly factories create jobs. Win-Win. 😉

For car assembled in Msia, there is no import duty.

Reduction in excise duty depends on local content.

IMO, high end cars are a good option for Malaysia, IF... they can produce the same quality expected from the German factories.

It's hard for them to compete with the Honda / Toyota factories in Thailand or China so this could be good.

I don't hear about a lot of complaints against the Kuantan Mercs, so perhaps they are able to keep the QC...

It could be good for Porsche owners. Even if you can't buy one and send it over, at least, there are options to service and repair Porsches across the Causeway when things open up..

It is not MADE in Malaysia. It is only ASSEMBLED in Malaysia.
Nevertheless, it is an achievement.

You'll find a lot more things that are barely assembled in a certain country and yet get labelled as made there...  look up the Mazdas, laptops and even hifi / TVs too.. when it says made in Japan on the box, for example, when you delve deep into it, you'll be surprised... cheers

Porsche will arrive in CKD pack, aka large chunk of semi assembled parts.

It is different from Made in China iPhone
