Dealer tweaked mileage. Previous owner showed me service records to prove this. What are my options?

In the usa, there is 3rd party checker like carfax that can authenticate the odometer and past accident history. So that consumers can buy pre-owned car with a peace of mind.

For SIngapore, we haven't reached that standard yet. I hope I can contribute smth to this. But you know lah. It takes a lot of effort to do a deep system reformat to this industry. hahaha.

I'm sorry but while there is a will, there is a way, when there is a will not to (a "won't"), there will be no way.

The recent court decision convinced me. A golden opportunity to set precedent and make legislation. Squandered.

It is very simple why they do it. Cars in Sgp are a fast depreciating asset. The longer the car dealer leave the car in his parking lot the more the car's value depreciates...at his expense. If he dont make it look attractive to sell...by tampering the odo he will only make a loss. He cant afford to do that for every car in his inventory.

thanks for your advice. perhaps you are right. if everything is ok i should just live with it. my only concern is if something happens after the 6 month lemon law period, then i dont have a case to fight

Bro, buy used car and you expect to invoke the 6-month lemon law, is like wanting to make a round trip to the moon. Unless you have a lot of money (or time) to burn, forget about it. There's a lot of horror stories of used car buyers wanting to invoke this law but end up in a suck-thumb situation simply coz the dealer gives 1,001 excuses that are valid and absolves them of any liability.

I've gotten 2 used cars before and I never thought to invoke it. Just gotta ownself do your homework and weigh between the options to either:

1) repair it

Or

2) scrap it/sell it

I bought from a dealer who during the viewing phase, promised me a *solid* 1-year warranty!

Any engine problem - I cover for you Boss! Just bring it back to me!

I just gave him 3 x bags full of "orh OK" and checked it with the help of my mechanic. My mechanic said OK - and I bought based on the trust I had in my mechanic; not based on the dealer's engine warranty.

I have never seen anyone invoke this law successfully, so you should treat any promises or clauses from dealers of used cars as non-existent.

Buy a used car with the mindset of getting it "as-is" - but be contented that it is after all a machine, so you can bring it back to showroom condition if you really wanted to (depending on your budget).

I don't believe a standard inexpensive generic OBD-2 scanner can report "true mileage" - I have one of these, great for reading some codes and erasing them but not much else. It is possible a professional diagnostic tool that is specialised for that car make may work better, but I don't know, since I don't have one of these (but have seen the larger suite of functions useful in car tuning etc). At that point, your benefit:cost ratio is in free fall unless you already own such a tool - in which case you're in the trade, and this whole discussion is moot.

May I know which youtube channel you're referring to? Good to provide a direct link so we can learn for ourselves. The reason I am asking is that you can say anything you want on YouTube and there's a particular dua kang local YouTuber who frequents this forum and flogs his brand of crap.

Thank you. First time I'm seeing this guy, and I like him. No nonsense and presents his show well. And Carly looks good, I'll have to get one of these to try it out.

Few days ago saw this used car 13k mileage - 1 week later it travelled back in time to 9k. 😂

Quite a typo there.

On a side note, ERP 2.0 might be able to eradicate odo tampering all together, if dealers don't find a backdoor to it.

Erm. have you bring the car for servicing since you bought the car? You can bring it to your workshop for a thorough check. Ask them test drive your car, check OBD fault code, do see got leakage anot. That is for a piece of mind lah. Not trying to ask you to find fault with the dealer.

They're bound to be wear and tear parts one, but that is the "used car taxes" we are paying lor. don't have to be so negative nancy about everything! 🙂

yes i did. everything seemed to be in order

i go to the dealer expecting wear and tear, since it is a used car so i cant expect it to be perfect.

but the fact that they lied about the mileage is very disappointing. i'd rather a dealer come clean and tell me everything wrong with the car so i know what to expect going forward

If it is an attempt to bring more attention to that page and even earn your endorsement....

Everyone seems to be trying to post stuff on YouTube and trying to get views over there to monetize their content. The TS and the guy who provided the YouTube link are merely Clutched and First Gear. Circumstantial I know, but still.

Ah yes I also wanted to say the same, ERP 2.0 cumming! If got full time gps tracking then there can be mileage tagged to IU

Lesson learned, bring your witness, produce hard evidence, not just a photo. and what else the dealer is going to say , we dont know, so be prepared to fight the case.  If the judge is keen to review the case, he could well have given the plaintiff more time to come back, but he simply dismiss the case, meaning he is not interested in Odo tampering issues.

Perhaps. But I didn't know Carly could do this, and now I do. That's something. I still won't be fully convinced till I try it out myself.

don't take it too hard. 🙂 they wanna earn your money, not wanna make friend with you. So it is natural that you will encounter crook.

I'm sorry but there is nothing you can do. I used to think it was apathy and lethargy but I'm increasingly convinced our entire system is massively corrupt.

It could just be as simple as tagging the last recorded mileage in the Log card during a transaction.

A simple conspiracy could be someone within the related agency kept blocking such "improvements".

Unless MPs table the legislation and pass them into law, no one gives a F about motorists in SG, because these are poor people problems.

The rich buys brand new, and some are chauffeured their whole life.

I agree with all you say. As for "conspiracy", it's rather telling that an advisory board for some regulations relating to cars had a very senior and connected person in the used car trade leading it. At least that's what I seem to recall. Foxes guarding the henhouse.
