"Some 400,000 more lorry drivers are needed to plug a shortfall across Europe, according to consultancy Transport Intelligence. The same estimates suggest that Poland needs at least 120,000 drivers, while Germany and France also have a shortage of more than 40,000 each. The industry estimates that the UK needs 100,000 drivers to partly alleviate supply chain pressures that have seen people queueing at petrol stations around the country this week. A Sky News analysis suggests that the UK's shortages are being made worse by one of the largest declines in lorry driver workforces across Europe."

bsswan 6th Gear October 2, 2021 Share October 2, 2021 This is an issue we actually should think closer about...... the idea of relying on cheaper labour. Most truck drivers in Europe came from New Europe, the Eastern block, and started to earn better money working further West at a lower salary than local drivers. They sent much of their money back to their family, built good homes and educated their children, such that, then, kids don't want to do the work of their fathers - this is fair. Western EU population, then, didn't want to do the work because the salary had been lowered through years of hiring cheap labour. Most drivers, then got older and retired or moved back home without a new generation coming in as replacements. This will soon be replicated, later, in Singapore for drivers and construction workers. Cheap labour is not a long term solution and we need, here, to take this as another warning. The China construction workers coming to Singapore stopped coming because their families had more money and as a result of shortages in China, their salaries increased to stay home. SG moved onto cheaper labour but the cycle will stop when this batch of workers repeat what happened with the China workers, they improved themselves, at which time we need to start paying more. This is what is happening in EU with drivers, they are increasing salaries but, unfortunately, they left it so late that it will take years to fix. Let this be our warning. 5

This is what is happening in EU with drivers, they are increasing salaries but, unfortunately, they left it so late that it will take years to fix. Let this be our warning. It's not only that. Transport and logistics workers - be it on ships or trucks - are totally fed up with the coronavirus restrictions and procedures that they have to follow in the course of their jobs. Imagine waiting in queue for hours, then get tested every time you have to haul a load across borders, or stuck on a ship in port because not allowed to disembark for weeks on end. The workers are quitting. Especially now with Christmas and New Year coming soon. Nobody wants to be stuck in a queue when they can be with their families. UK now has to look for more willing people, more desperate foreigners. Ceca might be a short-term solution. Many many just waiting to come. But will their unions accept it?
