This new SL-Class has strong hints of the AMG GT, but better execution overall. Finally the BMW 8 series has a strong competitor...

The new Mercedes-AMG SL, the new edition of an icon, returns to its roots with a classic soft top and sporty character. At the same time, the luxurious roadster as a 2+2 seater is particularly suitable for everyday use and puts its power down on the road with all-wheel drive for the first time. High-tech components such as AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active anti-roll stabilization, rear-axle steering, and optionally available AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system are available. In combination with the Handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, this results in a driving experience of the highest order. As a consistent Performance Luxury model, Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach has developed the SL completely independently. Two models with AMG V8 engines will kick off the market launch.

Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its debut in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.

The successful racing car was followed in 1954 by the 300 SL production sports car (W 198), which is called the "Gullwing" because of its unusual doors. In 1999, a jury of motoring journalists voted it the "Sports Car of the Century." Other highlights of the model history include the "Pagoda" (W 113, 1963-1971), the evergreen R 107 (1971-1989), which was built for 18 years, and its successor, the R 129, which is considered an automotive sculpture because of its striking wedge shape. The abbreviation "SL" to this day thus stands for one of the few genuine automotive icons in the world.

In the decades-long development history from full-blooded racing car to open-top luxury sports car, the new Mercedes-AMG SL now sets another milestone. It combines the sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence that characterize modern Mercedes models.

"The SL is an icon: For almost 70 years, the distinctive sports car has delighted Mercedes customers of every generation around the world. With the rebirth of the roadster from Mercedes-AMG, the new SL more than ever remains the symbol of this timeless fascination," says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales

"The new SL combines the sporty genes of the original SL with the driving performance typical of AMG. At the same time, it offers luxury and comfort at the absolute top level. This combination is unique in the sports car segment and is also reflected in the interior - where the highest levels of comfort and quality meet the right helping of sportiness. The high-quality combination of analogue world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes it clear that the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era," says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH

"With the new SL, we have created a repositioning of the iconic SL design. The expressively modelled exterior conveys a light and purist impression and brings sensual beauty and extravagant design into perfect harmony," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group

"We at Mercedes-AMG consider it a great honor to have had the privilege to develop the new edition of this sports car icon. When we were tasked with the overall development of the new SL, we were able to start from scratch without building on an existing structure. We are proud of the result, which once again demonstrates the high level of engineering expertise in Affalterbach. The new 2+2 concept combines agile driving dynamics with a high level of comfort and unrestricted suitability for everyday use," says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH

With its exciting design, state-of-the-art technology and outstanding driving characteristics, the new Mercedes-AMG SL sets standards in the luxury sports car segment. The exterior design fascinates with a perfect triad: it combines the modern Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity with the sportiness typical of AMG and characteristic details. The two power bulges on the hood are just one of numerous features reminiscent of the first SL generation. The interplay of light and shadow makes the overall appearance visually light and low. It is clear at first glance that the new SL has returned to its sporty roots.

In the top model SL 63, the engine develops 577hp and provides a maximum torque of 800Nm over a wide rev range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. The roadster's top engine thus conveys effortless superiority in every rev range. The acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in an estimated 3.5 seconds illustrates this. In the Mercedes-AMG SL 55, the V8 engine delivers 469hp and a peak torque of 700Nm. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes 3.8 seconds.

The further developed AMG 4.0-liter V8 engine still operates with biturbo charging, in which the two turbochargers are not located on the outside of the cylinder banks, but in between them in the cylinder-V. The advantages of the "hot inside V": a compact engine design, spontaneous response of the turbochargers and low exhaust emissions thanks to optimal airflow to the close-coupled catalysts.

Disappointing design.

Front like CLA, rear like 911 Cabriolet/Lexus SC430.  Rims like after market or like BMW one. The S-Class Coupe is a lot more distinctive.

Unfortunately these cars are always a tad underpowered stock. Sub 500 hp for the 55 and sub 600 hp for the 63 just doesn't give proper bragging rights anymore lol. No 600hp no talk. 😁

got 180 version for Singapore?

SL180 😁

Friend, you get it all wrong. Singapore buyers focus mainly on the badge, buy a SL180 and most will laugh at you. Do it like China by naming it SL260 or SL350 and most people will give you a :a-m1212: as little will know that these are powered by just a 1.5L (SL260) or 2.0L unit (SL350).

I didn't plucked these moniker from the air, CLS260 is indeed powered by a 1.5L unit under the hood, while E350L & G350 comes with a 2.0L engine. :a-confused: @inlinesix got hope for his G Class liao.

It is so ironic that the 1st generation A140 has a larger engine (1,598cc) than the latest generation CLS260 (1,497cc)... :omg:

Looking at these newer series of Mercedes SL, I feel almost none of them can compare or match the timeless classic lines of the SL320.

And when Princess Diana drove one, it both car and human made each other looks better in front of the paparazzi.

Very few cars designs can do that nowadays.

I have always been a fan of the SL since my teens in the 80s.  the SL is a flagship of MB and one of the earliest with gullwing doors.
very much like the 911 , the SL lines have been carried from generation to generation, such that you could recognise an SL from one gen to the next.   This time they kinda broke it. It no longer looks like a GT roadster but more like a sports roadster.   The SL was once thought to be discon especially when the S class coupe emerged.

the SL is one of those cars with a long production for each variant (up to 20 yrs !)
started gawking at R107s at Autobahn last time.  Clip on hard top, pagoda roof. And then it was taken over the next ten years or so by the R129, i think thats the Diana one you are talking about.  Then to the first truly modern new gen SL R230.

here’s how an R230 Engine would look. love the creamy drive.

It's the first production vehicle to use an electric exhaust gas turbocharger.

Source: https://www.motor1.com/news/578120/mercedes-amg-sl43-debuts-turbo-four-f1/

Just hours after dropping a subtle teaser image, Mercedes adds a new entry-level version of its elegant SL-Class roadster to the mix. The Mercedes-AMG SL43 literally offers half the engine of its siblings, swapping a twin-turbocharged V8 for a single-turbo four-cylinder. Of course, being a product of AMG,  it’s not a typical four-pot. And it certainly doesn’t have half the power.

The big news for this version of the SL-Class is its M139 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Mercedes-Benz fans are familiar with this engine, but the boost comes from a single electric exhaust gas turbocharger. The technology is pulled straight from the automaker’s Formula 1 efforts, utilizing the same 48-volt electrical system that powers the starter-generator. In short, a very small electric motor in the turbo spins up the shaft up until exhaust gases take over. As a result, Mercedes says the engine offers "particularly spontaneous throttle response across the entire rev range" while also increasing engine efficiency.

2023-mercedes-amg-sl43-front-view.jpg

What does that mean for the driver? The SL43's four-cylinder makes 381 horsepower (284 kilowatts) at 6,750 rpm. As for torque, you'll get a stout 354 pound-feet (480 Newton-meters) starting at 3,250 rpm and holding steady to 5000 revs. The starter-generator system can also add an extra 14 hp (10 kW) for short periods, and yes, that technically makes the SL43 a mild hybrid. Shifting duties are handled by the familiar nine-speed MCT, sending power to the rear wheels only.

Punch the SL43's throttle, and Mercedes says 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) arrives in 4.9 seconds. Flat out, the entry-level SL will reach 171 mph (275 km/h). It may have half the turbos, half the cylinders, and half the displacement of its muscular siblings, but it certainly doesn't have half the performance. Mercedes is also keen to mention the smaller engine means less mass up front, giving the SL43 its own handling characteristics. That's further tweaked by lighter torsion bar stabilizers specific to this trim.

2023-mercedes-amg-sl43-side-view.jpg

To the casual observer, the SL43 looks identical to the rest of the lineup. A keen eye will note small changes to the vents on the lower front fascia, as well as a smooth rear fascia devoid of vertical vents. The SL43 also trades square exhaust tips for oval finishers, and of course there's SL43 badging. 19-inch wheels are standard, with 20-inch and 21-inch wheels optional.

Beyond that, you'll still find all the cool SL features common to the SL55 and SL63. That includes available rear steering, numerous drive modes, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, and a supremely luxurious interior filled with digital screens and the latest MBUX system.

Pricing and availability for the Mercedes-AMG SL43 will be announced closer to production.

I saw this on Garrett turbo. Using the same tech. Did merc buy from Garrett?

So basically instead of using a twin turbo, a smaller and bigger turbo, the car maker could use this single bigger turbo to do the same as a twin turbo. Taking up less space and less piping works. Cool. How reliable? Nobody knows.

I saw that on some photos the rims have 5 lug nuts while on some others the rims have only a centre lock nut.
