Maybe what he locked was the rear passenger compartment to prevent the terrorist from jumping car. It clearly doesn’t prevent him from leaving the car when he needed to

Yeah maybe using the rear door child lock feature, leaving the front doors still unlocked. He was definitely still in the taxi when the bomb went off.  Quick thinking indeed!
