designed by people that were amazed by the first gen iPhone and thought... hey! we can do better.

but by the launch, tech has had leaps and bounds of advancement while these "geniuses" are still stuck in the past. 

best of all, they probably expected consumers to welcome this "upgrade" with open arms.

I think they said cannot choose. Cause Ah gong knows better. If they let everyone choose the smaller unit, how to charge more when car owners have to pay for it.

and overlooked the fact that most (if not all) car owner/drivers will have a hp that can do all that the new IU display unit can do.

Well for the current IU, one can also not install. For some classic cars it is totally not needed if one lives on landed and will use cash card for entry. 
and most importantly the IU spoils the look. Like this car.

correct. Same for bikes. As long as stay away from ERP zone/gantry.

but the new system is supposed to track the car movement and pay per use of road. Details to come. We may not have a choice of whether to install or not.

All these new systems and units are just excuses to collect more $$$. 
The excuses will be : installation costs increase, development costs increase, infrastructure costs increase, vendor costs increase, operator costs increase.
