Eventually I tried WD40 as suggested in one of the webpages given above. It was effective and quite easy to remove the tree sap on my windscreen. The sap has been there for a long time ( more than a year ) and it was gone in a couple of minutes. 

What I did was to put a drop of WD40 on the sap. Put a piece of tissue paper to avoid the fluid stay at the spot better and wait for a couple of minutes. Then I rub it a bit with the tissue paper and it's gone in a minute. No need to apply a lot of force.
