'Unsafe' for visitors at night: NParks shed light on why after visitors seen stranded behind closed gates

A group of visitors stuck behind the park's gates at night after visiting hours.

A video posted online by Facebook user John Han shows a group of visitors stuck behind the park's gates at night after visiting hours.

In the video uploaded on Saturday night (Jan 22), numerous people - including children - can be seen lingering behind the closed gates of Coney Island's entrance.

The video also cuts to a shot of a signboard on the gate, stating that Coney Island is closed from 7pm to 7am daily.

"All visitors are to leave by 7pm. No one is to remain on, or enter, the park when it is closed," said the sign.

Han's video has been shared almost 300 times.

Mr Chia Seng Jiang, group director of Parks East at the National Parks Board (NParks), said the agency is aware that some visitors were unable to exit Coney Island Park after the gate closure.

Park security subsequently arrived within the hour to open the gates for them to exit.

Mr Chia explained that the park is not artificially lighted, and is shut to the public from 7pm to 7am to allow nocturnal wildlife - some of which are critically endangered - to have a natural environment to thrive in.

As there are no lights on the island, it is also unsafe for visitors to explore after 7pm as they might get lost or put themselves at risk.

Information on Coney Island Park's opening hours can be found on signages at the shelters and its entry gates.

Signboard text can can be larger but still some people from young till old never bother to read or don't care, thinking other people always must give chance to them.

Maybe can impose fine, like unclamping errantly parked car.

Turbocharged

Just need to enlarge the opening hours font on the sign and then add this magic sentence.

"All overstayers will be saman $214 (with GST lol) per pax per day. Serial offenders will be charged in court for trespassing in state land."

The reason they give is very funny. For nocturnal animals to thrive on the island. Thrive as in do what? Sell durian? Sell illegal sex drug? There is nothing on the island, nothing to eat, no animal entertainment. Develop the island and link the mainland to the island, then tell ppl at night cannot go. You might as well leave it as it is, as an isolated island. Then the nocturnal animals will not be disturbed.

Humans can be nocturnal as well. Some at night cannot sleep. This is the best spot for them.

Many people hang out along the beach area in the island facing the sea. So maybe these people just never keep track on the closing time of the gate and ended got stranded behind the locked gate? Anyway, how come people can stay in the island until late, no scare mozzies?

They clean up the island when they develop it. Dont think there will be any. If there are just label the island as a dengue cluster.
