"However, academics over the years have written about the sunk cost fallacy, which describes how Singaporeans, after spending a fortune to purchase their cars, are likely to drive them more frequently – rendering usage controls such as electronic road pricing and petrol duty less potent."

From the motoring journalist point of view.

But don't worry, the govt will solve this by increasing the ERP and petrol duty until you feel that it is as potent as the COE of your car. Problem solved.

Our SG favorite motor journalist questions the rationale behind the COE system. Will government listen?

He talking nonsense. High COE coincide with low quota so even those paid a lot and drive a lot wont make much diff since the total number of these drivers is low. Meanwhile those who got 2-3 yo car with low COE still remain the bulk of car owners and got their car for less

Was it really this high? The car is $200k itself 30 years ago?

Now E200 is already more than 300k

True but that time can buy a 5-room HDB with this price. Now HDB is double whereas the E200 is still the same. Morale of the story is don't buy cars, buy houses. 😀

New COE criterion could drive down prices of electric vehicles

SINGAPORE - From May 6, the price of some electric vehicles (EVs) could be nearly $30,000 cheaper than what they are today.

The Nissan Leaf EV, which is now listed at $181,300 with a Category B certificate of entitlement (COE), could potentially be priced in the $150,000 region when it is re-categorised to fall under Category A.

This would close the gap to more conventional options such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis which cost around $130,000 to $149,000 with COE.

The new EV-specific criterion for COE categorisation was among the measures announced in Parliament to accelerate EV adoption in Singapore. As at end-2021, there were 2,942 fully electric cars, representing just 0.45 per cent of the total car population of 645,150.

The existing 1,600cc and 130bhp cut-off will continue to apply for cars with internal combustion engines, which includes petrol-hybrids. Premiums for Category A COEs have traditionally been cheaper. So far this year, the gap between the two car categories have ranged from $19,000 to $30,000.

Of course,  if one  will to spend 300k buying 10 counters of shares , 10 years later he would likely be richer, but for sure he would be 270k poorer if he will to buy a e class now. But decision making in life is not so straightforward and life is not evolve around money alone.

WUSG don't deal with this lah.

WUSG is liberal gay agenda. 😂

But in all honesty this seems to be the same as the stall owner who said that if people were pissed at price increases.
