I can see the logic of planting a listening device in a mug but knowing anything from the Chinese embassy will be heavily scrutinized and can be traced back to them, there must be other placement methods that won't allow the other side to catch you with your pants down.

That bug will have to be planted in the toilet bowl.🤣

Cannot imagine sending toilet bowls as gift.😅

Embassy give mug as gift seems a bit cheapo leh.

I will always give mugs as Xmas presents to those I don't care about but have to gift as part of Xmas formality in office 😁

wan le wan le... shot down mean no evidence.. mean dunno who flew the balloon..

China admitted leh.

After initial hesitation, Beijing admitted ownership of the "airship", but said it was a weather balloon that had been blown off course.

Stupid USA should not have shot down the balloon.

This is an old Chinese trick.

In 169 BC, Chinese general, Han Hsin, is said to have flown a kite flown above a besieged town.

The defenders shot down the kite and Han Hsin calculated the distance his army would have to tunnel to reach under the city wall.

:D

Now China know how far to tunnel into USA under Trump's wall!

I think in this case is to see how US will react. Maybe next time send a few hundred thousand balloon scattered all over US maybe can deplete US stockpile of missiles and jet fuel.

Multiple fighter and refueling aircraft were involved in the mission, but only one - an F-22 fighter jet from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia - took the shot at 2:39pm (1939 GMT), using a single AIM-9X supersonic, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile, a senior US military official said.

Supercharged

Hot air balloon was invented in China by 諸葛亮 during the Three Kingdoms period. As we can see, there has been some improvement to the original concept. 😁
