i think air drag at speed driving in sg is not that significant right?

Only City Driving less than 40 Km/h not affected..

will add on to this already good list, something that 99.99999% of all sg drivers do

dont accelerate like u trying to win a traffic light drag race, press slowly. U want to save time, can, be more alert, start stepping when light turns green and dont fiddle with ur phone

the amount of drivers who tailgate like mad when light just turns green/or when there is a red light like 30 metres ahead is mindblowing. Seriously, how much time do u really save?

Unless u drive EV wanna experience the EV acceleration then ok la

Aiyar, you beat me to it...

I was gonna give advice to all drivers in general like yours 🙂:

- Don't drive like the typical local driver, thinking the foot must be 100% fully depressed on EITHER pedal at any one time.
Learn how to cruise to a stop, especially when there's a red light in front.

And then, to all conti car drivers:

- Learn to let go when that guy driving the Japanese/Korean car is in front of you. Yes your car has a bigger engine than his puny Cat A engine, but he knows the road better than you; that's why he's in front of you. No need to floor the pedal just to try and overtake him - that 1 car - when there's a long train of cars in front still.

You can save A LOT of petrol by not switching lanes constantly.

Plus if you ever get behind me and do a dick move like switching out from and then back into my lane in under 3 seconds - you can be sure I will file a report to TP for reckless driving.

Non-fuel savers having a tendency to patronise a thread on fuel saving. An interesting world out there.

There are a handful of things that can save fuel realistically.

Frankly, just drive BAU, enjoy the ride and journey, no matter what you do,  there is no way one can save a lot of fuel money, so why bother? don't get sleepless about fuel price🤣

Agree. All fuel savers please go to lane 2,3.

Haha, the penny counting singaporeans, spend $150k on a car, hundreds a month on petrol and taxes and then drives like a pussy to save $0.50 on a 15-20km trip.

Just drive normal and don’t hold up the traffic.

I do agree on this!

Last time some guy in the forums asked a similar question on how to save fuel - he was driving some conti car with a price tag of > $200K...

I told him if he had to ask such a question and worry about such shit, then he probably is overleveraging his finances by buying too expensive a car (monthly loan repayments and all that). To rub it in, I said I could easily go with ron98 full tank every time with my Japanese car without even breaking a sweat when it comes to my car's running costs.

Boy, did THAT turn him on real good...

TBH, it's not about what kind of car you own or drive.

In Singapore, once you have gone over the hurdle of paying 3-5 times what other people around the world is paying for the same model you are driving, what is the couple of 10s of dollars to be saved? Life in Singapore is not stressful enough already just to scrim and save on that couple of dollars?

All said, when a person continues to feel the pinch of the raising petrol prices, best is to sell off the car and take our world class public transport system of MRT/BUS/Taxis/PHVs.

If you see the traffic light ahead is red, just coast your way there, only blip the accel as necessary to maintain coasting there [laugh]

I don't know why some people rush to stop at a red traffic light!

Nowadays many traffic lights have been modded to have a specific right-turn signal, got to wait quite long to turn right.

Nowadays indeed need to wait long to turn right. sometimes have to wait for at least 2 wave to clear.

I don't mind the car behind me coasting to a traffic light stop but it irritates the hell out of me when the one in front of me coasts.

Issue here is that when you are following a coasting-to-a-stop car, you have to modulate the brake and keep very close attention to the speed it is slowing down and watch for any sudden unexpected sudden stop for a much longer period of time.....

I implore for everyone to start thinking for other fellow road users behind you when coasting to a stop.

It's not about the price of car they drive. It's about trying to make the most of the $ and nothing wrong with it, pretty much an individual habit?

I have a family member who is always waiting for certain days to go supermarket because he can get an additional 2% rebate, sets air con to 25-26 degrees to save electricity, walk an additional 10 minutes just so that he can park for free. Let's put it this way... he's by no means considered average in terms of net worth.

To further contribute to fuel savings ideas:

1) When changing tyres, go for those with lower rolling resistance, esp if you are a high mileage driver.

2) Ensure your engine air filter is regularly changed/cleaned during servicing.

3) Try to drive your car within it's cruising speed on highway rather than go >100 km/hr on lane 1 always.

I myself do coasting too, but i don't go overboard doing it, esp when i know there are more than 1 car behind me.

Seen some drivers literally coasting like 10-20km/hr when the lights is like another 200m ahead.

I echo the point to just drive normally. No expectation to drive fast or put pedal to metal. Just drive normally, like any regular driver.

Because supposed fuel saving driving behaviour is being taken to extremes by some drivers, causing inconvenience to the other road users. The drivers themselves dont recognise it because in their minds, they are primarily focused on saving money and not being a driver on a shared road system. eg. Trying to nurse the car to go slow enough to only use electric motor only in hybrids, or accelerating so slowly that the traffic light changes red after that car clears the junction and end up only 1-2 cars clear each traffic light chg, hogging the rightmost lane at way below speed limit with a clear road ahead etc. Oblivious to the traffic around them. Questionable level of savings to self, significant negative impact to many other road users when taken cummulatively.

If the cost of driving normally is an issue, maybe cut down on discretionary trips or try to use other modes of transport on a more sustained basis. The issue is skyrocketing fuel cost, trying to save money this way doesn't go very far to plug the difference.

Ya true. I think for most local drivers, the recent spike in fuel prices should not cost them more than additional $150 per month, which is actually just a fraction of the total cost of car ownership here.

Naturally many of us may try ways to save fuel in times like these, but the moment we start to lose sleep and get stressed over it, i think it's time to switch to our world class public transport. Life is much more than driving a car ya?

Saying accelerating slowly is more fuel efficient is overly simplistic. There is a sweet spot where this is optimal, but it requires thinking and planning/anticipating, a capability which many drivers seem to lack.

A car uses more petrol accelerating than when cruising. You need to decide if its worth accelerating briskly to reach cruising speed sooner (e.g. merging onto the expressway) vs. gently accelerating just enough to coast toward the red light ahead. Or to go throttle off as soon as you know you're going to need to stop.

When I drive, I am looking several cars ahead, which enables me to manage my distance to the car in front, which I primarily do with my throttle pedal. Using brakes = converting fuel into heat. That gets you zero kilometres per litre. Use engine braking as your first means of deceleration - with some of today's hybrid or mild hybrid vehicles, it recovers some of that energy for use later.

When you tailgate, you're constantly between throttle and brakes, riding the bumper of the car in front.

Some say, if eco-drive until like that, might as well sell the car, need to worry and think so much. For me though, it is necessary to be thinking while driving. We are in control of a ton (or two) of moving metal and should be aware of what we are doing whether it is as banal as driving smoothly or as important as driving safely

I think that is exactly the issue nowadays. Socialising the negative impact of extreme fuel saving driving behaviour to other road users.
