Bad Repair Experience at MTE Garage

My first time owning a Volvo V40 Cross Country D2 Diesel engine car (my previous cars…Merc E200, E250 Cabrio and GLA180) …all with no major service or repairs issue.

The drive on the Volvo was great, very smooth and torque was very good too…was enjoying the ride until the first pump of diesel – 41 L full tank, managed to get about 380km on the meter?

I read from the Volvo manufacture manual…this model mileage is about 800km per 40L(20/24KM/Litre)

Since I have no specialize Volvo workshop to send to…..I google online and came upon the said workshop, claimed to be specialized in Volvos.

1.     Text the boss on 25th May and told him my car issues, and make an appt on 31/5

2.      They did a computer diagnostic check and the fault code read- No.2 fuel injector problem.

3.     Quoted to change ALL four injectors for $2,500.

4.     Spoke to the boss and said, since fault code shows only No.2 Injector malfunction, can just change one fuel injector only? He says best to change all fours.

5.     I find it too costly to change all four and wanted them to change only the No.2 injector only…quoted me $950 for one injector.

6.     Total bill came to $1,444.50 which include changing Air pipe, fuel filter and one injector.

7.     Test drive the car and I noticed a loud tapping sound (often hear from lorries or taxis), the supervisor says this is normal after changing injector and will go off after a few days?

8.     On 6th May, I text the boss to give my feedback…engine cannot start,. need to crank a few times - cold start, tapping sound is even louder…he says because I did not change all 4 injectors, but I say since computer fault code No.2 injector only and he say can try….and now is even worse than before.

9.     I managed to find another specialist and send car over for second opinion.

10.  Same thing…after checking with the computer system…fault code still shows No.2 injector. (no charge after spending more than an hour, asked me to go back to the workshop and see if they can rectify)

11.  Drove back to MTE, the boss tone was different now, keep insisting all 4 injectors need to be changed. He was reluctant is check and say if after checking still the same…will charge me for labor- $400.

12.  I was pissed, and told him what kind of after sales service is this…spend $1,444 and car is in worst shape than before. He relented and ask his mechanics to run a few test….to a point of getting another new injector to replace the recent changed injector…. after a few hours of switching the injectors …the fault code still the same, tapping sound, no power.

13.  He was very sure all 4 injectors need to replace …period.

14.  Lost confidence in him, after a few days of hash driving (almost wanted to sell the car away) …I make an appt with the second workshop – Gary’s

15.  After changing the No.2 injector and some tuning…car running smoothly…no more Tapping sound, the torque is back…told me that my V40 is a cross country, so the specs slightly different from V40…make sense.

16.  I text MTE to tell him the findings and my car is now running perfectly …I asked him if the injector could be returned back to the Spare parts shop for refund as they have given the wrong part for my car. (he mentioned to me before that the parts he take from have warranty)

17.   Toned changed now…items installed cant be refund, ask for proof the parts are wrong….I said, the workshop, the car and me are the best proof…I have no problem now.

18.  Since he is not going to help, told him I will seek opinions at the social media websites to see what actions I can take or go Small Claims to recover what is deemed fair for the wrong parts and service done…. fatigue in engine after repairs, lost of time and money….

Thank you for reading this far…any suggestions is greatly appreciated

You seeking a refund for wrong part (s) installed plus compensation for loss of time

You need :

1. Part(s) number. Reflected on invoice / receipt? This is actually the most important since the problem is as a result of wrong part(s) used.

2. Was your vehicle make/model stated as V40 or V40 Cross Country on invoice/receipt?

3. Any written warranty?

Cannot imagine if all 4 fuel injectors instead of only No. 2 were changed. Can become V40 CrossEyes.

Obviously, there needs to be proof that a wrong part was used that resulted in your car's problem made worse.

Good luck.

Stay safe

Cheers

I empathise with you TS.  However, you should have visited the Volvo authorised dealer's workshop, which a google search will surface.  Perhaps you wanted to save money and opt to go to outside workshop.  But the fact is, outside workshops are known to chop carrot, especially one which you never patronised before, so you must be extra skeptical and careful when quoted big repair amount.  From what a mechanic told me, a simple clogged\dirty throttle will result in a fuel injector error, something which can be solved for less than $100.  This should have been checked for first thing.

Also, you mentioned the Volvo manual states that the mileage is "about 800km per 40L(20/24KM/Litre)", this must be taken with a huge pinch of salt and greatly discounted.  Most cars will return just half of the stated ideal mileage in city area.  So the fuel consumption may not abnormal and nothing is faulty at all.

Such lousy workshop with bad business ethics should be put to shame.

Kudos to TS for taking the trouble to share the exasperating saga.

Although Money can be earned back but should teach that unethical workshop a lesson. Its a matter of principles. I will shame the workshop in every social media platforms that I have and even go to Small Claim despite all the troubles.

TS has encountered two workshops in a short space of time, one to avoid and the other, reliable.

You are doing a good service to the general motoring public, in particular, MCFers. Unethical businesses should be exposed to save innocent customers from falling prey to them.

Thank you, TS.

To TS,

The bottom line is the first workshop technical expertise rather than the spare part (injector) itself in contention. You can claim the labour charges but doubt you can claim against the wrongly installed injector. Injector wasn't faulty.

Take it as a lesson to always seek 2nd opinion or even 3rd opinion before committing to any major repair.

Buy a scan tool. Learn some DIY through YouTube. Buy parts online and replace yourself.

I can only say that the boss' advice of changing all 4 injectors is correct - assuming the injectors are indeed at fault here.

Just like you don't change 1 spark plug at a time.

And you don't change 1 tyre at a time when it's time to change tyres l.

And you don't change headlight lamp bulbs 1 at a time...

For everything else in your account... Can't really say much.

You need to read again. If change 4 pcs , bigger hole in the pocket and probably no recourse.

Probably best to cultivate a workshop from the get go by doing oil changes and general servicing..etc before approaching them for major repairs.

Less likely to be chopped I feel.

But then an unscrupulous workshop who knows

Go small claims claim back your money. Bring all the tax invoice etc to SCT.  Although troublesome you only need to do it once. Dont waste time calling the workshop.

Diesel fuel injector need tools to pull it out. It is not like petrol one which is simpler to pull out. It is also connected to the fuel rail. Could be quite messy spilling diesel in the process. The diesel fuel injector is a delicate part. The fuel is pressurized in it. And cannot have water contact in it. You do not want the insides to rust. So the fuel filter has to be replaced religiously according to schedule. No joke.

Hi PSP,

Thanks for the suggestions...

1. Yes...written on the invoice as - Replace Diesel Fuel Injector (V40D2) (3717)....I can easily checked with Volvo if this part no. is correct for my model and year, if the need to submit this for the courts.

2. No....written Volvo V40D2 (2015) and Chassis no., Veh no.

3. No...

As mentioned...after Gary's replaced the No.2 injector....car is ALL well. In fact I pumped full tank last week and looking at the trip mileage estimate...will be better than 380km.
