'Try not to chat': Livestream of Cathay busker Jeff Ng shutting down viewers goes viral

https://www.asiaone.com/lifestyle/try-not-chat-livestream-cathay-busker-jeff-ng-shutting-down-viewers-go-viral

For Cathay busker Jeff Ng, his 15 seconds of fame on TikTok turned into a great opportunity for his career. However, being in the spotlight now is threatening everything he has worked for.

With his meteoric rise to fame comes the airing of his dirty laundry and it ain't pretty.

Amid claims of a toxic relationship from an ex-girlfriend, a clip from Jeff's old livestream has recently gone viral on TikTok — ironically, the same platform that also made him an overnight sensation.

TikTok giveth but it taketh too, it seems.

According to the 85-second clip posted by TikTok user Pamminnie yesterday (July 3), Jeff was midway through a broadcast on a Chinese livestreaming app and addressing his viewers.

The caption on the clip read, "Not only live bar cannot talk, even livestream also cannot talk! Jeff Ng, you okay mah? [sic]"

The full context isn't apparent but the start of the clip shows Jeff apologising to his supporters for "not being able to sing" before asking them to "choose".

He continued: "If you don't want to leave, that's okay. I'll leave. After this song finishes, I'll leave the livestream. I can take a break as well. I'm okay. I'll just not collect my 'wages'."

It isn't immediately clear what's the issue but about halfway through the clip, Jeff replied directly to a netizen's message: "Sorry, it's not intentional. It just so happens that she was talking to you. I know you're usually here to listen to music. It's okay to listen to music but try not to chat."

Jeff went on to say that his viewers can do whatever they want and that they can "take your own sweet time to chat" after he has ended his livestream.

"So it's your choice. It's all okay. Really," he added.

A longer clip of the same incident posted by TikTok user Sgguobaohor shed more context with its caption that read, "Oh no, looks like someone made him angry and is asking his fans to choose between leaving or him leaving".

The extended version also showed Jeff explaining that he is "four days away" from hitting his target and he will not be able to earn money if he ends the livestream.

"Coincidentally, I'm four days away [from my target] so if I don't livestream today, I'll think of something," he said with a laugh. He then repeated that there's nothing he can do and he'll just not be able to earn money.

When one of the viewers said that they'll not be able to watch his livestream next time, he said: "No, you can still watch in the future. Just try not to chat... but I don't want to say anymore."

According to a netizen in the comments, the recording was of a livestream he had last year during the pandemic.

Other netizens didn't take kindly to his behaviour in the clip and described him as "passive-aggressive" and "controlling".

#trending: After quick rise to fame, Cathay busker Jeff Ng faces backlash, accusations of buying followers

SINGAPORE — Netizens are speculating if busker Jeff Ng of recent TikTok fame has been buying followers on Instagram in a bid to maintain a large group of followers after allegations of his abusive and unprofessional behaviour surfaced over the weekend.

Over the past month, the 32-year-old musician saw a sudden rise in spectators at his regular busking sessions at The Cathay, following several viral TikTok videos of his performances and widespread media coverage.

A Reddit user agreed: "The numbers are shooting up way too quickly and accounts look suspicious lol."

Looking at his follower list, netizens have noted that many accounts seem to be "bots", or fake Instagram profiles. The usernames of such bots often feature a string of jumbled letters and numbers, missing or generic profile pictures, and have few or no followers of their own.

On TikTok, video recordings of his follower list have emerged, with one user saying: "If you look at his follower list there (are) so many bots following him recently. That means he's buying followers."

Atome SG distances from busker Jeff Ng after abuse allegations, deletes posts

Buy now pay later brand Atome Singapore has distanced itself from busker Jeff Ng following recent allegations of abuse by his former girlfriend. Jeff Ng, who made headlines late last month for drawing a large crowd to the outdoor area of The Cathay, was alleged to have subjected his ex-girlfriend Lena Ng to psychological abuse and exhibited controlling behaviour. He was also alleged to have incessantly called her and cheated on her.

The allegations came to light last Friday and Atome swiftly took action, removing all posts of Jeff Ng on Instagram and TikTok. While Atome declined to comment on MARKETING-INTERACTIVE's queries, the brand previously said in a now-deleted Instagram post that the show by Jeff Ng was "incredible with such a strong turnout".

"With Atome, you know you can always take your first leap in achieving your aspirations," the brand added. The picture of Jeff Ng featured Atome branding on his equipment.

Another deleted post by Atome showed the local busker picking out his favourite outfits from Zara for his next performance happening outside The Cathay. The picture captioned Jeff Ng as "Singapore's latest sensation". Meanwhile, an Instagram Reel posted on 24 June which is still available on Atome's page showed the brand following Jeff Ng as he picks his next performance outfit at Design Orchard. Jeff Ng has since made his Instagram account private.

If this is a girl I can understand but I cannot stand gu niang men like this with passive aggressive behavior - feeling not ok but say ok, feeling angry but say not angry, feeling wronged but say nothing wrong. Remember I dated one girl exactly like this and bidded her farewell in short order.

Girls, when young, ish like that. Make you guess what you did wrong. But later mature into wife and by double digit wedding anniversary, such behaviour should be gone naturally [laugh] Or issit that we learn to understand each other unspoken words better?

🤭Before this saga, he's an unknown.

Just as he's beginning to be "known", its time to move on, much like The Cathay.

No loss.

If he's learnt any lessons n still want to improve in his craft, still got road ahead to do so. Otherwise, he at least had like 3-4 days of frame, I mean, fame.

So many things in life are like double edged swords. Fame is wonderful if one have not too many skeletons in cupboards, or flaws in character, in fact, perfection is best.

😂😂😂😂 I hope he realise that he dun own how one show an appreciation of music. Likewise, none of his fans owe him an explanation for who they want to support, or "unsupport" .

He's really just a childish man, petty and so insecure.

Anyways, can't hear a thing from the videos that's superstar material. I may be very biased cos I count the late Anita Mui, Roman Tang and Leslie Chung as real talents. 👍

😂😂😂

He should quietly move on and lie low till he's ready to stand up to very harsh scrutiny at his personal life that fame brings.

He is “well-known” sometime in early June if you are Tiktok user.

I have shown photo of his crowd size previously

You got me there.

😜 Not TikTok user except what's shared by friends in WhatsApp to watch. Usually humorous ones.

And nope, none shared this "well-known" person.

So, in our circle, he's pretty much an "unknown".

😁🤭😂😂😂
