This is supposedly the 3rd generation XC90, which Volvo decided to give it a name change to signify the switch to all electric drive train. Earlier reports, however, suggested that the model, which it is said will blend SUV and sedan design elements, will be named Embla, after the first woman in Norse mythology.

In any case, Volvo announced in February that it would be keeping the XC90 around for a few more years. The SUV that heralded the brand’s modern revival will continue to be produced in Torslanda, Sweden, after a visual update.

The new EX90 will be unveiled on 9 Nov 2022,about 6 weeks from now.

The real selling point of this brand new EV from Volvo is the suite of cameras, sensors, lasers, and software that monitors both the exterior environment and the driver.

Outside, the EX90 will use an advanced Lidar system along with 16 ultrasonic sensors, eight cameras, and five radars to monitor the environment. Volvo's in-house software brings it all together, and the automaker claims it's one of the most advanced systems available. It's capable of detecting non-reflective items like a tire on the road at 120 meters and pedestrians at 250 meters, all while traveling at 120 km/h.

Inside the cabin, more sensors and cameras are trained on the driver, monitoring eyes and grip on the wheel but it's not just a double-check to make sure eyes are on the road. Volvo uses its own software to gauge the overall awareness of the driver, and if things aren't normal, the system will alert the driver. If the system determines the driver is unresponsive, it will bring the EX90 to a stop and call for help.

The EX90 is so cheap (cannot even get a cat B COE here), no wonder sold out lah... :D

All-Electric Volvo EX90 Is Sold Out Until 2024

US$80k+ price didn’t put off buyers who rushed to place on order on the EV sibling of the XC90

Turns out it’s not just million-dollar hypercars and limited-edition performance vehicles that sell out almost instantly. Family haulers do, too. Volvo has been so overwhelmed by the response to its new EX90 that the first year’s production of the all-electric SUV has already been snapped up.

The EX90 was unveiled last year and will serve as the electric-only alternative to the firm’s older, but similarly sized XC90, which comes with a choice of combustion or hybrid power. The EX90 will cost from $80,000 (S$107,200) but that fact didn’t dissuade buyers from slapping down deposits with dealers and snatching the small number of cars available in the first build year.

Customer response has “surpassed the company’s boldest and most ambitious internal projections,” the automaker said. “As a result, Volvo Cars has closed the order book for the time being because the first scheduled production run is sold out, but it will re-open again soon.”
