Almost EVERYONE is Wasting Money on Dash Cams.

Other than camera resolution, actually frame per second matters alot if need to capture fast moving vehicles relative to cam car speed. Eg: most 1080p dash cams are 30fps which may not be able to capture clear VRN of very high speed cars racing or cars speeding past near the edges of the video screen - 60fps videos will have much higher chance of seeing the VRN when the video is paused.

Some of those better 4K dashcams should have a setting to toggle either 4K at 30fps or FHD at 60fps. I much prefer the latter.

Next gen dash cam should be able to do plate recognition and record all the plates/GPS of the vehicle..

Next Gen Dash Cam should Built-In from Factory like Tesla.

My dashcam is with me for more than 8 years. Initially thought i was paying too much for it. Now feel that it is quite worth it. LoL

Do they happen to be ITB100?

My current setup ITB100 for both font and rear and both have been operating for 10 and 8 years respectively.

Video quality like no change from when they were new. But i rarely park outdoors under hot sun lah.

No. LoL. Mine happens to be blackvue 500series 2CH. Park under the sun also no change in quality. Used in previous and current car. But I dont run it on battery. Only when ignition on.

While comprehensive and insightful, the review misses out on a couple of important factors:

- heat stability: earlier versions of Blackvue dashcams tended to overheat. I wouldn’t be surprised if the cheaper dashcams are prone to this problem just due to less design considerations for heat dissipation

- reliability: a friend had a cheap China dashcam and as long as it showed him an image on its built-in LCD screen, he thought it was working. However when he had an accident and went to retrieve footage, he found that the SD card was empty and corrupted without the camera warning him

- resolution comes with it storage: recording at 4K can swallow up a 256gb card really quickly and you might find data being overwritten before you can get to it

I find that dashcam specifications have plateaued for the past 10 years where 1080p seems to be the norm where 4K seems to be the exception. This is in contrast to earlier days with 480, 640, etc. came in quick succession. Aside from having WiFi, my iTronics ITB-100HD is pretty much on par with a Blackvue DR-750, even though it records in 60fps.

What we need are larger/better sensors that afford faster shutter speeds, not higher resolutions.

I used to be like you. But eventually gotten into installing one.

Though I have never been involved in an accident before, I find the footage useful for me to review near accidents so that I can improve my awareness on the road.

It has got its other uses too:

1)Once I ran over some debris on the expressway. Obviously, I could not stop but used footage to review what I ran over to determine if it might cause under carriage damage. Turns out it was just some soft exhibition props.

2)The other time, I recorded a motorised wheelchair in the center lane of the road. That was for my own entertainment.

3) Once a motorcycle rear ended me at a filter lane. There was only cosmetic damage but I used the footage to determine whether it was because I braked abruptly. I did not. So my conscience was clear when I took the token sum from him.

Good dashcam very important to me. I send the videos of near misses (not my fault), with car number clearly visible,  to TP for their action. Hopefully TP would have sent the culprits a love letter to encourage him/her to be more careful.

Examples are : Car recklessly switching lanes diagonally across from lane 3 to lane 1 on Lornie HW. The shocked look on video of the driver's face when I gave him a loud horn (and he realised how close I was to taking out his right shoulder and head with my front bumper at 70k/h), is priceless.

A car filtering out from a double dotted line at AYE without stopping to check for oncoming, forcing me to e-brake, inches from his rear bumper.

My sis who was driving my car had a major accident (hit & run) by a pick up truck and I didn't have a dashcam installed that time. The damage was extensive, had to replace the boot, rear bumper, rear drive side door, driver side door, front bumper. She was so shocked at that accident and didn't catch the number plate. There wasn't any camera at the junction and we had to take the full damage ourselves.

Had a small accident and because of the dashcam, it helped us "nab" the drivers. I do believe in the importance of the dashcam and the videos.
