To the man on the street, this move tell us how our education system has failed to deliver real talents who are badly needed here. How can our government has no idea of the demand for medical professional in the next 5 to 10 years?

If I were to dig further, all these so call short fall of talents, not just in medical field, are creating opportunities for foreigners to come and take over our job. If these are unforseenable by the incumbent, they seriously don't deserve the high pay and respect from Singaporean. Ehmm can we replace of ministers with foreigners too, since we lack of such talent with 20/20 foresight?

My brother and the daughter of a friend got accepted by UK/Australia universities for admission to their medical school, but they did not make the cut for local Uni.

End up my bro was eventually offered a scholarship by MOH when he was in his final year. He did not take up the offer in the end due to the uncompetitive bond requirements Vs what he can get in Australia.

Now he's happily practicing in Australia with no intention to return. SG just lost a talent, but I guess in the end it's all about the money.

The govt seems to want cheap FT doctor and medical staffs to keep wages low. Hmmmm I wonder what is the quota like for doctors.

Yes.  A few of my students, also moved on from here due to the inability to secure a place in the 2 schools  (back then before LKC came up) and are now happily practising there with no intention of coming back.

One of which is a Cardiologist, another in ID

Can I have a Chinese speaking doc?

apologise. I can only converse in Chinese.

No need liao. I personally saw translators in Ng Teng Feng being engaged to help Chinese or dialect speaking patients converse with non local doctors.

Would you be able to throw some lights on how much these 'doctors' are paid? So unattractive that nobody wants? Somehow this group of doctors are considered the 2nd class like pharmacist? I am sure it will attract locals if given the opportunity then some other routine admin jobs. At least you are also addressed as Doctor and a decent secured pay.

dunno. they are foreigners. different pay scale to locals i suppose. And even local non specialist staff positions don't pay that well.

Local universities cannot train more cos simply there are not enough opportunities to train medical students.

In fact a big chunk of what used to be considered essential is now using simulators, role playing etc etc. Nowadays local patients are also lot more fussy, don't allow medical students to examine etc.
LKC now takes up TTSH. Duke takes up SGH. And u imagine the medical students from NUS need to be trained also.

One of the reasons why our student quality is considered good generally, is cos the training standards is pretty decent.

U want to have diluted training, just look at across the border.

From victor POV, doctor is getting higher pay than most ppl.

He may not realise that this role is a dead end without any chance to be a specialist.

Big money only goes to Specialist.

My cousin was shocked that she took up that specialisation after working in TTSH COVID ward.

I will tell her not to brief the public.  Otherwise, her name will pop up regularly on MCF.

@Rickster everyone who works in australia prefer australia. Other than meeting more drunks, it's a happier place to work. Nicer lifestyle in victoria/WA/NSW.
And doctors get paid better there than in SG vis a vis to their peers.

I've known no one who doesn't prefer to work there especially those who graduated there. Even my friends who go there for HMDP/fellowship would prefer to stay there if not for setting up roots here already.
