MHA invites British tycoon Richard Branson to S'pore to debate death penalty & anti-drug policies with Shanmugam The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has invited British billionaire and founder of Virgin Group Richard Branson to Singapore for a live televised debate with minister K Shanmugam on Singapore's approach towards drugs and the death penalty. MHA's offer includes covering some of Branson's travel expenses. The ministry said in a press release on Oct. 22: "Mr Branson's flight to and accommodation in Singapore will be paid for. Mr Branson may use this platform to demonstrate to Singaporeans the error of our ways and why Singapore should do away with laws that have kept our population safe from the global scourge of drug abuse." But this, inviting private foreigners to engage in idle debate just for kicks and public grandstanding, is not a seemly act for the representatives of a nation state. It stinks of insecurity. And the grandstanding is the sort of thing the NK dictator might pull, just with less bombast. Our gahmen should just accept there will be critics and they can't silence them when they don't fall outside their jurisdiction. Not that they should be silencing them even within, but that's a whole other discussion.
