Although very few people text me, I do get this Hi once in awhile from people I know.

I will just reply, "Yes, anything?"

Nothing to be irritated about la.

Instead of "Hi", I get "在吗?" more often.

My reply is always 我在天涯等你骗, 别来海角套我钱。 [laugh][laugh][laugh]

"hi" is like "knock-knock, are you there ?"

he lazy to type 100 words and then find, no one is listening to him.

if you respond to the "hi", then he throw the 100 words to you.

otherwise, it may not be important to carry on after the "hi"

Ya exactly.

The 'Hi' is to see whether you there or not, before he say anything further.

I ignore all Hi from strangers in WhatsApp and not read at all.

As for work chats, if it's really important they'll usually type out what they want after awhile. Else I'll reply only when I'm free.

I received one Hi recently from work chat during Friday family dinner in restaurant. I responded hi as I was waiting for food to arrive.

The sender from India time zone quickly replied with a great wall of texts which basically ask me to attend a one hour conference call in 5mins time. The call was apparently scheduled few hours ago and I guess he deem it fit to only notify me with only 5mins to go.

I very politely told him to fk off.

I feel a single hi to check whether I’m there or not is redundant and wasting time when he/she can just get to the point at first go.

When I read the msg, I can reply to the point immediately instead of having to type “yes?” Or “how can I help?”

I like to do things fast and efficiently so that I can more time to nua and surf MCF 😂

Same. The person who sent me the Hi is from that country but based on SG.

Seems like it’s a common culture there to do this, maybe they’re being courteous.

But I just wanna get to the point especially with IMs.  🤷‍♂️
