Rumors of a fancier Yaris Cross have been swirling around for years and now the Lexus LBX is officially here. Positioned below the UX and serving as the new entry-level model, the tiny crossover is an indirect replacement for the defunct CT hatchback. It rides on the same GA-B platform as its Toyota sibling but with different styling to better fit Lexus' design language both inside and out.

The LBX is 4,190 millimeters long, 1,825 mm wide, and 1,545 mm tall, while having a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. Riding on 18-inch wheels as standard equipment, the petite Lexus is actually slightly bigger than the Yaris Cross and tips the scales at 1,280 kilograms. It will be offered with a choice between front- and all-wheel drive, with all configurations coming exclusively with a continuously variable transmission.

At the heart of the LBX is a hybrid powertrain based around a three-cylinder, 1.5-liter gasoline engine. It produces a combined output of 134 horsepower (100 kilowatts - just nice in cat A) and a maximum torque of 185 Newton-meters. It's enough electrified punch for a 0 to 100 km/h run in 9.2 seconds and a maximum towing capacity of 750 kilograms.

All versions of the latest Lexus get a MacPherson strut front suspension while the rear uses a torsion beam for the FWD models and a double wishbone if you opt for AWD. Although the technical specifications for the latter have yet to be disclosed but it will add an electric motor at the rear. Interestingly, the small crossover has an aluminum hood as well as molded resin wheel arches, rockers, and lower door sections to keep weight down.

Stepping inside, the LBX boasts a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster with an optional head-up display joined by a 9.8-inch touchscreen. The infotainment supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but only the former has wireless connectivity. Lexus has once again teamed up with Mark Levinson, which supplies the 13-speaker sound system that comes along with a subwoofer.

Stick to the front-wheel-drive model and you get a cargo capacity of 332 liters with the rear seats in place. The AWD-equipped LBX is likely to be less practical due to the extra hardware installed at the back. Lexus mentions it hasn't made any compromises in terms of quality and attention even though this is the new entry-level model. The LBX is the company's first model for which development primarily took place in Europe.

It's scheduled to enter production by the end of this year and go on sale in Europe along with additional markets in early 2024.

No mention of the front and rear wheel track. From the second pix, the bulging rear wheel arc indicates a wider track? The wheel arc looks ugly.

I can only see it as a car that targets petite, well to do Asian women. Hahaha

Just kidding but to be honest on first impressions it did gave me that idea. The name is also quite amusing, LBX, you know kinda reminds you of BMX and training wheels.

I read somewhere that LBX = Lexus Breakthrough X-over.

Amusing.

You might be right about the target market. The Yaris Cross is a smash hit in Europe, and Lexus is cashing in on the popularity for this genre of cars there. It would be attractive to single men/women, small families and retirees.

Together with the Audi Q2, this would be the smallest luxury crossover in the market.

One of the sales person in Lexus told me that it is coming to Singapore. But they cutting the power from 134hp to 130hp to make it CAT A. Acceleration also increase from 9.2 to 9.5 seconds. I think still acceptable. Pricing is predicted to be around the Audi A3 1.0TSI. And will be at the 2024 SG Motorshow if that event is confirmed.

Every brand is detuning their engines to meet Cat A. No wonder Cat A is going up up and away! Only MIW cannot see this. What’s wrong with collecting more money?

If you never tell me and I see this on the roads, I will think the Lexus badge and wording is self add one.

call me old school, but Lexus does not associate with small lightweight cars.

however, Borneo probably got one thing right. In SG, got badge and nice key fob that can put on table, means can sell liao. Someone can earn gao gao from max loan financing

You are right about its name.

WORLD PREMIERE OF THE ALL-NEW LEXUS LBX

LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover, a compact SUV that will extend Lexus’ brand appeal into new market territory. It embraces contemporary ideas in design and technology while maintaining the distinguishing Lexus qualities of the luxury craftsmanship and Omotenashi hospitality.

With the LBX, Lexus is taking a new approach to building a model range, to better match customers’ preferences and lifestyles.

The line-up offers a choice of four model “atmospheres” in addition to the base grade: Elegant and Relax which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool which have a sportier, more dynamic character. Each has been designed with a different type of customer in mind.

Emotion and Cool models stand out with bi-tone paintwork and 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish. The Elegant and Relax versions have a monotone exterior paint finish and glossy 18-inch alloys.

Where the interior specifications are concerned, the Emotion model comes with perforated synthetic leather upholstery with red accents and contrast stitching on the seats, centre console and door trim. The LBX Cool – the top dynamic-themed model – has an Ultrasuede and leather bi-tone black/dark grey interior with copper details and stitching.

Different moods are evoked by the Elegant and Relax atmospheres. Synthetic leather in a subtle Forest Brown shade or Ammonite Sand features in the LBX Elegant, for the door panels, instrument panel and console pads as well as the seat upholstery. For the Relax model, the choice is Saddle Tan or Black semi-aniline leather with distinctive Tatami stitching.

In addition to the four atmosphere models there is an entry level LBX which, comes with advanced technology features as standard rather than extra-cost options, in contrast to some competitor models. Notably these include the extensive active safety and driver assistance systems included in the latest generation Lexus Safety System +. The entry model and the Emotion and Elegant versions can be specified with a vegan-friendly interior with no leather products.

Equipment option highlights include a 12.3-inch Tazuna concept digital instrument display, head-up display, remote parking, digital key, Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio, Panasonic’s nanoe™-X air purification technology and a power back door.

COE is high not because of cars changing to CAT A, but rather it is due to PI, AD dealing with guaranteed COE and commercial fleet rental companies like BlueSG, Shariot and worst of all GetGo. GetGo used to be existing car owners sharing their cars. Now it’s them bidding for cars.

If COE were to drop without LTA’s input, the easiest way is that Non-Guaranteed COE is mandated with no option for Guaranteed COE, or just force S’Porean to bid for COE themselves.
