It is still a safety hazard. Imagine a group of people, adults and kids happen to be standing around there. And someone accidentally pushes the pole, the grating opens up the hole, and a kid next to it end up stepping into the hole. 

Bizzaire things can happen, and it is good that the person highlighted it early

Probably this man understand how the escalator cover works.

Funny, normally if you want to install anything on the escalator, you would need that escalator company to do it to avoid warranty or maintenance issues. Wonder who installed this and if it was the escalator company, then that brand need to be careful 😆
