Steam Neutral Newbie March 11, 2004 Share March 11, 2004 Some useful info to share. There is a 4-year expiry (from the year of manufacture). Thereafter, the tyre may burst (or blow up or explode) whilst in use. How to find out whether your tyre has expired? Check for this sign: ( *2603* ) There is an asterisk at the beginning and at the end of this serial number. The first two numbers 2 6 will tell which week of the year has it been manufactured. NB : One year has 52 weeks. The last two numbers represent the year of make. Therefore, *2603* shows that the said tyre is manufactured in the 26th week of the year 2003. *2699* This shows that the tyre is made in the 26th week of 1999. Check all your tyres for safety purposes. Do not use expired tyres. They are likely to burst (especially when running in hot weather) because the rubber component may have hardened and cracked. hope it helps. cheers. ↡ Advertisement
Roberttan 5th Gear March 11, 2004 Share March 11, 2004 (edited) hi I think your info is not so correct. check with my tyre shop. most tyre shelve life is 5 years,he said now michelin even give a 6 yrs quality warranty so it is safe to accept a tyre which is already 2-3 yrs old which you have 2-3 yrs to use them safely as for the date? that is no xx99 ok. if is 1999 made should me like this xx9 this infos is sure correct one. use this just a reference ,some brand new tyre also can blow if the quality is poor or wrong applicaion and poor maintenance, and sometime improper installation just my 2 cents worth he said some good tyre which is older than 5 yr old still can managed Edited March 11, 2004 by Roberttan

Vit4wd 1st Gear April 29, 2004 Share April 29, 2004 Is there really such thing as expiry date for tyres? I have been using my Michelin Pilot tyres for the past 5 1/2 years and it still works fine. Has there been any cases of exploded tyres as a result of using themn past the expiry date?

Virus 2nd Gear April 30, 2004 Share April 30, 2004 If didn't push it too hard, should last quite long, even the rubber compound has degraded. Tio bo ??

Genie47 1st Gear April 30, 2004 Share April 30, 2004 It is not the usage but its resistance to the environment. Ever seen rubberbands go sticky and tacky? That is what I mean by degrading. That is why you got to check for the expiry. An expired condom is a disaster in a making.

Vit4wd 1st Gear May 1, 2004 Share May 1, 2004 (edited) Tyre life span 3 years from manufacture date? I can't seem to find the number for manufacture date on the tyre. Had that tyre installed in Dec '98. It's a Michelin Pilot MXV3A. Travelled 35,000km on this tyre so far. There's still 1/3 thread left. Road holding and braking still feels fine, except for some hairline cracks on the thread. My car is in the shelter most of the time, so think it should be OK. The tyre is not exposed much to the sun and rain. Edited May 1, 2004 by Vit4wd ↡ Advertisement
