if I just keep it as collection but never use it..like I transport the unit in without power ing up the unit and the unit was kept in luggage at woodlands, would I still be charged ? since I didt operate the unit.

I am more worry at singapore.

With USD90-120, you can only get an average one. The better ones from Escort or Beltronics will set you back USD200-300. Or perhaps ValentineOne which I think is USD300+.

Becareful. You need to know if the radar detector detects same freq as Singapore.

those cheapo 90 and 120 forget it. Go for Valentine. But once again, do check out if they can detect sg freq.

Hi Hmanxx,

The charge is for "possession" [:p] not only for "operation" [sly] . Like firearms, "ada" alredi salah [dizzy] , not yet even "pakai" [rifle] .

Penalty is for possession of radar detector.

However, latest speed cameras used are laser, not radar. Those static speed cams are still radar, but no need to use detector liao. Everyone knows where they are. And got signs also.

Buy a good 1 better their freq range wil be wider and more accurate. My colleagues in US all rely on them. If wan to use locally must conceal it properly. Oh get those with ECCM, electronic counter counter measure. If not get only detect but dun jam their freq then they wun know.

the unit that I intend to get contains almost all bands + laser detection..should be sufficient.

No one anwer what is the penalty like ?

I am thinking of getting the unit and keep it till i head to Malaysia, I will not bring it into singapore again, just purely use it at Malaysia NS highway drive, finish using it will safe keeping at my father-in-law's home.

Anyone has experince in using radar detector ? how good is it.

Disclaimer : this is what was related to me, any TPs out there dont come after me.

I was told that because the Microwave bands detected covers quite a wide range like Ka, K, bands etc, you will pick up auto sensing doors used by buildings, microwave towers for repeating of radio signals, etc. They do have the filters to filter out these signals, but you run the risk of ignoring the real radar gun signal, if you dont use the filter. Be prepared to get a lot of beeping sounds all the time in city driving. Also the range will never be as good as what they tell you due to road conditions.

The detector has to be mounted in a line of sight position, which opens you to the risk of it being seen.Unless you switch it off. Another warning, if you detect a radar signal and you hit the brakes, the TP might see your brake lights and if he radio ahead and you get stopped, they will search your car until they find it, so good luck there.

For laser detection, does it mean have to be on the dash ? Cos I am sure you can sense laser signal if it is hidden.. Laser is Light..

Laser ls light, unless you have mirrors to reflect the light around your car into your radar detector, which might be hidden under your dash, its unlikely it can be picked up. By then, the signal would be too weak to be picked up and detected.
