More than half of Norway's new car sales are electric or hybrid vehicles
According to Reuters, more than half of Norway's new car sales are electric or hybrid vehicles. It is a 12 percent increase over 2016.
In the article, International Energy Agency (IEA), which excludes hybrid vehicles with small electric motors that can’t be plugged in from its figures, states that electric car sales in Norway stands at 39 percent of the world's market, making Norway ahead of any other country. To put things in perspective, Netherlands takes second place with only just 6.4 percent of its car sales being electric vehicles.
The main reason for such demand is likely to stem from the huge incentives the Norwegian government offers to EV buyers. The incentives include not having any purchase tax and no VAT on purchase. Tolls are also reduced and parking is often free.
