He was convicted by District Judge Ng Peng Hong on Wednesday, December 4, who also found him guilty of nine additional charges, which includes obstruction of justice and failing to stop after the accident. This is aside from 59 other charges that Mr Lee is facing, that have to do with illegal money lending and online gambling, which will be ruled on later. Additionally, on the day when he dragged the police officer, he was actually forbidden from driving due to previous traffic violations, and lacked the required third-party risk insurance for his Maserati when the incident occurred. On that day, Officer Khairulanwar apprehended Mr Lee as he drove down Bedok Reservoir Road shortly before 9:30 in the evening, as he had seen that Mr Lee had no seat belt on. The officer then approached the driver’s side of Mr Lee’s car. When he stood beside Mr Lee’s open window, the driver of the Maserati “fled the scene by suddenly reversing the Maserati, before accelerating quickly forward while the victim was standing next to the driver-seat door,” according to Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh. Unfortunately, Officer Khairulanwar’s uniform got stuck in the car window, and he was dragged for over 100 meters, finally falling on the road. Mr Lee then drove away. The policeman sustained pain in his right knee, neck and lower back, and had to take 20 days’ medical leave. Mr Lee left the Maserati near Aljunied Road, at Willow Avenue, and later sought refuge with a friend, Jeff Chan, who tried to convince him to turn himself in. He borrowed a shirt from Mr Chan and threw his own shirt away. He was eventually arrested at Mr Chan’s house at 2 o’clock in the morning on November 18 and charged in court on that same day. Mr Lee claimed his innocence, saying he had lent his car to an acquaintance known as “Kelvin,” whom his defence team had never been able to produce at his trials. Nor was Mr Lee himself able to give any pertinent information about “Kelvin“ such as his last name or address. Concerning Kelvin, Senthilkumaran Sabapathy, the Deputy Public Prosecutor on the case told Mr Lee, “You are obviously lying.” The other DPP, Timotheus Koh, said, “The defence is conspicuously silent on the fact that the accused has, to date, failed to produce this Kelvin, even though Kelvin is key to the defence’s case. He said Kelvin was the driver, Kelvin caused grievous hurt, Kelvin drove dangerously. Kelvin is a cornerstone to the defence’s case. Yet all they can muster … is that the accused was not asked by the prosecution and the police for more details about Kelvin.” As he has been deemed a serious flight risk, Mr Lee’s bail was increased from S$10,000 to S$70,000. Lee Cheng Yan's sister told the district court that she and her elderly parents have been paying for Lee's hefty legal fees and supporting his four-year-old twin daughters in Japan on the understanding that they would be repaid with the car proceeds. Lee, 39, is currently serving a total sentence of about six years and eight months. He has two lifetime driving bans - one meted out to him for a 2017 incident where he dragged a police officer who was trapped in his Maserati door along the road. The second was given in 2022 for offences including reoffending by driving while banned and again evading the police. Wednesday's hearing was for the forfeiture of the Maserati which was used in the 2017 offence. According to the Road Traffic Act, if a repeat offender uses a vehicle he owns to commit certain offences, the public prosecutor can apply for the vehicle to be forfeited under certain circumstances and the court must order it. Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh asked for the case to be adjourned for four weeks for two reasons: First, for Lee's family to prepare any submissions, and second, for the prosecution to perform checks on whether any credit companies are linked to the purchase of the Maserati. The cost of the Maserati and its value now are both figures that are unascertained. Lee, who appeared in person in a purple prison jumpsuit and blue mask, did not want to address the court directly. Instead, he spoke through an interpreter, first to ask if he was suspended or disqualified at the time of the 2017 offence. He was told that he was disqualified and was driving while under disqualification when he dragged the police officer with his Maserati. He said he hoped to be given a chance to claim his car back. SISTER ADDRESSES COURT Lee's sister then stood up to address the court. She held a bundle of documents and said she actually did not need the adjournment and was prepared. "I wish to state upfront that my family and I do not condone my brother's wrongdoings," she told District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam. "In fact, as family members, our lives have been the most badly affected by his irresponsible actions," she continued. "My mother and I have been financially supporting his four-year-old twin daughters in Japan, and my oldest brother who turns 42 this year is intellectually disabled and is unable to care for himself." She explained that her brother took large loans from his parents to pay for his "very hefty legal fees" for the previous trial and other legal matters. "That was with the understanding that he wishes to pay them the moment the car is released. In other words, what he did is pledge the car to repay the loans he had taken from his parents," she said. She said her 76-year-old father took a loan from his "one and only life insurance" and is unable to repay the loan to date. He has been paying interest to the insurance company, she said. Lee's sister continued to say that her mother pawned her jewellery to loan her son a large sum of money. "In addition, my mom and I have been paying for his children's expenses all this while," said Lee's sister. "So while my brother legally owns the vehicle, the fact that he has pledged the proceeds of the vehicle to return my parents the money, essentially we can argue - that makes my parents the de facto owners of the vehicle," she said. She added that when her brother was first convicted in 2001 - also for driving while under disqualification - he was not even 18 and had not gone to army. "A mistake is still a mistake, he has done wrong and by law according to the provision stated the court has every right to forfeit the vehicle," said Lee's sister. "But what we are trying to put across is the first conviction was when he's not even 18 ... it's a little harsh to take that into consideration." The judge asked if the term "pledge" was used casually or legally, and asked if the family would be seeking legal advice. Lee's sister said they had no documents to prove the "pledge" as the transfer of ownership of the vehicle could not take place while the vehicle was impounded. She added that they did not intend to seek further legal advice. "I fail to see the correlation between personal loans given by your parents to your brother to help him out," said the judge. "And this vehicle, I'm not sure what its market value is, or how much we can obtain for it." She adjourned the forfeiture hearing to Feb 27. Lee's sister declined to speak to the media.

Source: https://www.motor1.com/news/564856/ferrari-purosangue-crossover-new-rendering/ Ferrari recently transitioned from testing the upcoming Purosangue underneath a Maserati Levante test mule to using camouflaged, production-spec bodies of the model. Using recent spy shots and videos as a guide, our artist creates a rendering of what we expect when the camo comes off. The Purosangue has a nose that arches downward from the windshield, and the headlights incorporate into the very tip. There's a large, trapezoidal grille. The openings in the corners have an LED running light on top of them. Along the side, the Purosangue has clean styling with a soft curve along the doors. A sharp crease starting behind the front fender adds a visual flourish to the flank. This rendering doesn't show the Purosangue's rear, and the tail is the part of the body that Ferrari covers up the most. It appears that the arching roof flows into the hatchback. Raised portions of camouflage there hint there is a spoiler at the point where the tail becomes a flatter, horizontal piece. The development vehicles have a pair of exhaust pipes coming out of each lower corner. We expect the finishers to look fancier than the smallish circular tips visible in the spy shots. We still aren't entirely sure what powertrain the Purosangue uses. A video of the crossover driving silently hints at it coming with a hybrid. This engine could be the plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V6 from the 296 GTB where the mill makes 818 horsepower (610 kilowatts) and 546 pound-feet (740 Newton-meters) of torque. Rumors also suggest a V12 option that might come later. The Purosangue rides on Ferrari's new Front Mid Engine Architecture. This platform puts the engine behind the front axle and a dual-clutch gearbox that mounts at the rear. It has all-wheel drive. The spy shots and videos show the Purosangue with a fairly low ride height. Although, it might have an adaptive suspension that would be able to lift the vehicle for a more rugged appearance. Don't expect to take this Ferrari rock crawling or racing through the desert, judging by what's visible so far. Ferrari announced the Purosangue way back in 2018 and promised to debut the model before the end of 2022. We should finally get to see the long-awaited model in a few months. Deliveries begin in 2023.

SINGAPORE: A Maserati driver who dragged a traffic police officer along the road with his vehicle in an escape bid and reoffended while on bail pending appeal wants his vehicle back. Lee Cheng Yan, 39, also asked the High Court to give him a lower jail term by making some sentences run concurrently, in a criminal motion heard on Wednesday (Jan 18). Lee is currently serving a total sentence of six years, four months and 16 weeks. He has two lifetime driving bans - one meted out to him for his 2017 incident with the police officer, and the second in 2022 for reoffending by driving while banned and again evading the police. On Wednesday, Lee told the court via Zoom that he wanted his Maserati to be returned so he could sell it and use the proceeds to provide for his two daughters in Japan. He said his sister has been communicating with the Attorney-General's Chambers for months about this issue, to no avail. Lee also asked the court to reduce his sentence. He said he was "really sorry" for his actions and did not realise the consequences of his actions, while he was "having my freedom outside". He said his sentences added up "is a bit high" with "all proceeded consecutively, with almost no concurrent at all". Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh said a hearing has been fixed in the State Courts over the forfeiture of the vehicle for Jan 25. He cited the Road Traffic Act and said that if a repeat offender is convicted of driving while under disqualification and the prosecution applies to forfeit the vehicle, the State Court would have no alternative but to forfeit it. Justice Aedit Abdullah said while the provision may appear to be mandatory, he "would be surprised" if Lee was not informed of the forfeiture hearing. "Normally, they would be given the opportunity to be present to make whatever arguments they want to," he said. He gave directions for Lee and his sister to be informed of the hearing so they can attend. On the call for a lower sentence, the prosecutor said Lee had not mounted an appeal and there has been a delay of nine months. Lee did not give sufficient reasons for his delay, saying that he was ignorant of the timelines provided and that he was inhibited by COVID-19 isolation. Mr Koh said Lee should be aware of the timelines as he did successfully appeal against his first sentence for the 2017 incident. As for his claim of isolation, Lee had told prison officers in the beginning that he did not want to appeal, and this was his choice, said Mr Koh. The sentences are fair, given that Lee had reoffended in largely the same manner while on bail, he added. Lee tried to ask for lower sentences, repeating his same points, but Justice Abdullah began to respond sternly to him. "Mr Lee, you are charged this way because you drove under disqualification on three occasions," he said. "You drove on separate days, so you get separate charges." He said Lee seemed to be downplaying his responsibility and does not seem to be remorseful nor understand the seriousness of what he had done. "I understand what I have done, but the sentences are a bit high," Lee answered. "No, Mr Lee, the sentences are not high, they are right," replied Justice Abdullah. "In fact, they could have been higher, now that I look at it again. Aside from your dangerous driving, it is not the right thing to go around driving while under disqualification on three occasions, it's not even the same day Mr Lee. Five months each is not high. This is not your first offence, this is an enhanced offence, and you were already sentenced back in 2017 for three months, three to five months is not a high uplift," he said. "You have not learnt your lesson," the judge told Lee. "I cannot understand why you can come here and ask for a reduction this way. You should be thankful the sentence was not the maximum." He said Lee should spend his time in jail thinking about what he did. "There is no merit whatsoever (in this criminal motion). I have not even probed you on (the delay)," said Justice Abdullah. "I really hope your honour can give me a chance and some leniency. I'm really, really remorseful," said Lee. "You're remorseful? All right," replied the judge. Lee said he hoped for a chance to reunite with his daughters slightly earlier. Justice Abdullah dismissed his criminal motion, saying he saw no reason to disturb the sentences that were imposed. "Family relationships are important, but people should think carefully about the consequences of their actions before committing them," he concluded. BACKGROUND OF THE CASE Lee was first sentenced in July 2020 to a jail term of four years and seven months, along with a fine of S$3,700 and a lifetime driving ban. This was for dragging a traffic police officer with his car for more than 100m in a bid to escape. Lee was also banned from driving at the time in November 2017 when the officer stopped him for driving without a seat belt on. The officer was caught in the driver's door of Lee's Maserati by his uniform and dragged along when Lee sped off. The officer later fell off and was given more than 20 days' of medical leave for injuries to his knee, neck and back and later medically downgraded by the Home Team's medical board. While on bail pending appeal, Lee reoffended by driving while under disqualification. He also drove dangerously and evaded a police roadblock. He was sentenced in 2022 to another 21 months and 16 weeks' jail, banned from driving for life again and issued a S$1,000 penalty. The 2022 sentence included terms for other offences related to illegal football betting and instigating a man to gain unauthorised access to Singtel's system in order to retrieve subscribers' addresses, so a third party could track them down for money owed.

She said she had been trying to push for a conclusion, and that "I think we all want to move on with our life". She said that as a taxpayer herself, she did not wish to waste any more resources unnecessarily through further adjournments. She said that the section of the Road Traffic Act that allows for the forfeiture of vehicles used in certain traffic offences such as Lee's stated that the court can decline to make a forfeiture order if it punishes innocent parties. She said that life has been extremely difficult for her parents, who are caring for a severely intellectually disabled son aged 42. She said that "most people in Singapore won't be aware that life is extremely harsh" for such families. "If they can get back this sum of money, it will go a long way ... and I don't think the law should punish them," she said. In response, Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh said the conditions for the forfeiture of the vehicle have been fulfilled under the Road Traffic Act's relevant provision. According to Section 43(5) of the Act, the only instances where a court is not to make a forfeiture order as sought by the prosecution are when the offender is not the vehicle owner, or if the offender used the vehicle without the consent of the real owner. Mr Koh said the vehicle has been fully paid for and that Lee is still the registered owner of the vehicle as recently as July 2022. He said that while Lee's sister asserts that her parents are the de facto owners of the car, the purported transfer of ownership occurred only after the offence so that the purpose of the forfeiture provision would be frustrated. "Offenders should not be allowed to transfer ownership of vehicles to avoid forfeiture," he said. He also said that Lee's sister had attempted to "muddy" the waters here. In response, Lee's sister disagreed that the transfer of the vehicle was done to "muddy the waters". "I think there's no doubt that Cheng Yan genuinely believed the vehicle will be returned when he pledged the vehicle as collateral to my parents," she said. Judge Ponnampalam said that even if Lee's sister's case was taken at its highest, and the court accepts that it was done with a bona fide intent and not as a means of escaping the operation of forfeiture legislature, it still does not avert the operation of the provision in the Road Traffic Act that compels the court to order the forfeiture of the vehicle. It was used during the offence and Lee was the owner of the vehicle at that time, she said. Lee, who attended in person in cuffs and prison outfit, interrupted to ask if the other items that were seized would be returned to him.
