Sorry guys, I am very new to ICE so need your kind advice. Is the above HU good and what does the xdp 210 processor does? And if I change to this unit do I need to change my speakers too? What would be good enough for normal listening?

The HU was sony's flagship HU, original cost was almost 2K. The sound from its burr-brown 24 bit DAC is hard to beat. BUT, no MP3 no CDRW, and the display is quite shitty, cannot see properly during daytime.

If you are using the C90 and the 210, you get parametric eq and crossover for sub but I am not sure if you can run 2 way active. To get the best from this set, you need the digital output adapter to convert the C90's digital signal to an optical one. Then you can run a toshlink digital cable from HU to processor.

As for the need to change speakers, why not just put in the HU+processor first then play around with it before deciding?

Thanks bro for your detailed reply. Sorry I cannot understand much of your 2nd paragraph due to my poor understanding of ICE.

So I reckon this product should be quite an old product? Is $600 worth it to pay for a second-hand one? No MP3 and CDRW seems quite bad...

hi there,

let me explain ah.

the C90 is the old school sony high end headunit. this was a competition SQ headunit with many functions. though it lacks many *bling bling* factors that are present in today's modern day HU, in terms of SQ, it will ROCK!

if u see urself goin into serios SQ, this is a good deck and thats like a good price.

but if u just want something to sound better than stock and u still wanna play MP3s and other stuff, then i doubt this deck will satisfy u. get a modern day deck like a P80.

the C90 is an old deck. But its still dam power. just that it lacks the bling bling.

just imagine, lets say u wanna shop for a car. then u ask how is a Civic SIR.

people who know their cars will tell u the civic SIR is the old sch tiong chia which is super fast this and that. then u will ask how come the car don have 'auto seat' timer, auto seat movers, things that many current cars have. but in the hands of a good driver, the SIR will be faster than a lot of present day cars. So then u ask urself, do u want the power and speed of the SIR or u want a car that has 'all in one', ie like the new civic, though not as fast as the SIR, it has all the present day comforts.

hope this helps.

cheers

being an old processor, one of the limitations u'll have to live with is the limited choices you have for crossover points. yes, u can run even 3-way active + sub, i believe, but for example, your sub crossover point is at its minimum, 80hz. some might argue that's fine. i don't really think so. other crossover points are also limited, the next most important being the cross btw midbass and midrange. if u're a believer that this is ok, then this set is for you.

beyond that, it's sound quality is good, its equaliser functions are great, u can still fix it if it breaks down, cos sony has parts.

I have been using the Sony C90 for a few years already.

...

The head unit itself offer very good resolution (think SQ) quad 20 bits processor.

but by itself it is a very basic head unit. it can only play CD audio, no mp3, no wma etc.

it can play cdr but only in cd audio. it basic duty is just that play, play cd only.

...

if you want more processing, you have to add a processor such as xdp-u50d, xdp-210eq or xdp-4000x.

...

xdp-u50d - very basic processor, only offer some sound field processor like jazz, rock etc and basic TA, like right/left position listening etc. no eq feature, only passive connection.

...

xdp-210eq - again basic processor, no sound field like the xdp-u50d, only baisc TA like the xdp-u50d. but this one have 21 eq point. again can only do passive connection.

...

xdp-4000x - this is the one if you want to complete in car audio comp. it have very good TA feature, best that I know of, compare to a lot of other processor TA. and it offer 184 eq point, you can do what ever tuning you want. but the problem with this processor is that the crossover point is very limited. but you can either add on another XO or make use of your amp XO to complement. but this one is very ex....it cost 1.5k when it is new.

and it can do 3 way active connection. as matter of fact the processor is design to run 3 way active.

...

so you decide...hope this help.. you can pm me if you want to know the detail. talk over the phone will be able to explain better.

....

cheers....

Hey thanks man! Thanks too for the offer to explain to me over the phone. Your real kind and helpful! Means I need to add a processor to enjoy other form of music if I purchase this set, and it will cost me more than 1.5k. Wow. Think i give it a miss.

Mine is only a small car, and I don't think need such a good quality HU. Too bad I guess.

Thanks again bro for your advice. Thanks everyone! :D

I have this sony deck c90, xdp 210, cdx848 and neccessary cables laying in my HDB for 3 years now.

Was working before I stripped it.

Letting go as parts at very reasonable (very reasonable) price.

Most probably will be good for those who have this system and would like to have some spares.

Would prefer to let it go as a whole lot.

E-mail me if interested at [email protected]
