as it's name implies, suspension is what keeps your car "suspended" - so you don't feel every bump and rut on the road.

most suspension systems are made of springs and shocks.

the spring is meant to absorb impact and the shocks (gan tong) are what prevents the spring from going "BOING!!!"

most systems are coil springs over shocks, which gives the name coilovers.

but most people use it interchangeably to refer to aftermarket performance suspension systems that come with spring and shocks.

technically, to lower the car, you change the springs.

but it depends on the spring rate of the new spring and the return rate of your shocks.

that's why when people want to lower their cars, they generally change to aftermarket shocks too - or get a complete "coilover" set.
