Hi all,

Due to change in work arrangement, will need to get another car for myself.

I am planning to purchase a used car for transport from home to work only. Considered long term rental but monthly payment seems too high about 1000pm.

I am thinking between either the Optra or Lancer.

Appreciate if any current owners out there can give their FR on the two rides above.

Basically the car will be used only on week days and parked in the office. I prefer something which has low maintenance(like reasonably riced spareparts) and in the long run provides little or no inconvenience.

Thanks.

**Note that these are the two models I'm currently thinking with budget below 31K,

Was also looking at the smaller build cars but a liitle worried on reliability...

Dont want to be burdened with issues once I purchase the car...

Would prefer Auto cars incase someone else in the family wanna use the car during the weekend...

Of course Lancer.

Thanks bro... Leaning towards Lancer as well...

OMV is similar for both Optra and Lancer.

4 years old and maintanence free is going to be hard to get.

If the car was maintainence and trouble free when new up to now then most parts are worn and need to be replace/repaired soon.

If it was not trouble free when new, its not going to be trouble free when 4 years old.

Unless you intend to drive while putting up with minor irritations, inconveniences and noises............ [rolleyes]

How long do you intend to keep this car?

I used to have a neighbour, who is also like you, buy a car solely to commute between office and home. He like to go after those that left a few months before COE expired. So he always changed car [laugh].

He is not so concerned about maintenance as company gives him a fixed allowance on car maintenance.

Regards,

Well, I'm willing to put up with the minor issues as I know what I'm getting as a used car.... however it is the major issues that I want to avoid.

As long as spare parts are cheap and readily available (in case it needs changing due to wear and tear), it should be fine.

Hi Kelpie,

Well maybe intend to keep for 3-4 years... if all is good. Also if scrap car get OMV 55% and bal COE back....

Saw some ads for cars left 7-8 months COE for 3-4K...

Also contemplating on this but not sure in the long run if this is feasible.

Any nippon then but get it from a second hand dealer that gives a 6 month waranty and an inspection cert.

Thanks Mightmito....

Was also thinking of Jap and asking delaers for some warranty.

Normally private sales are cheaper but then risk is there..... unless you know the seller... :D

If i am you, will def go for Lancer. Only thing need to note is, the mileage is 85K and if the previous owner haven't done the 80k servicing, then it will be major servicing with timing belt change. you have to calculate that cost too. I cannot comment on optra and you have make sure the mileage is not tweaked by the agent. Before buying insist for AA inspection.
