The models with a single USB are easy to come by, and I got one cheap at $2 or $3 at a CashConverters Sale.

Have you got one of those? Have you tried piggybacking on that with a USB extender (multi-port adaptor) (easily available at Challenger or Sim Lim/Funan stores)?

There's a reason why most come with 2 USB ports. Many ppl anyhow use and overload it. If it's made of poor quality it will become a fire hazard.

Those that you get with a Single USB for cheap, usually only support up to 2.1A max. Some only 1.0A

So when you share it with 4 devices, it is slower than charging through your USB port of a laptop,

Reputable brand is one thing. If I'm not wrong it's equipped with a 10 amp fuse so it stated 8amp to tell ppl not to exceed it. But how many ppl actually go look at the specs of their devices and make sure it doesn't add up to more dan 8 amp?

For those who buy extension splitters, you need to look at the wire size.

If the wire is too thin, then you can overload it, without the fuse blowing and the wire will smoke first.

8A can charge 8 IPhone or 4 IPad / Note 3 at the same time with full speed....

4/5 ports version should be more than sufficent for most people.

Those cheap ones are not able to supply enough power to charge your gadgets.

Correct , always look at the max output of the charger. The charger will only output whatever it is capable of.

If it is 2.1a max, you plug in 10 phones. Each is just going to be charged at 2100/10 , 210ma each...

That will depend on your alternator. Actually the car's voltage and amps flutuates a lot. It's not very ideal to charge your ipads & mobile devices. You will find that charging is very very slow. At home the voltage & amps are stable. I usually do not do charging of my mobile device in the car unless it's necessary, it's just too slow. I rather use a mobile battery to charge the devices.
