Hyundai is keeping this model, no matter how great the design and engineering is, in their home market. Sedans, esp large sedans are all but dead worldwide...

The prev gen Grandeur/Azera sale was so bad in the US that Hyundai stopped importing it long b4 that model was killed. 

Koreans still have some pref for sedans although they too are jumping over to large SUVs like that the rest of the world.

What is the likelihood for BMW to kill its 5 series for X5, or Mercedes-Benz to ditch its E-Class for GLE?

The Azera is bigger than the 5 series and E class. To ans your qns, why not? Sales determine everything. 

Anyway Mercedes Benz and BMW sells becos of prestige factor. The Azera doesn't have that. Its just a large, comfortable and very well made sedan for the mass. Sales figures are important for such large sedans.

OK maybe my earlier example is not quite suitable in term of market segment. What about Honda Accord for CRV, Toyota Camry for RAV4, or Nissan Teana for X-Trail?

What I am trying to say that unless a flagship sedan has totally lost its appeal, and no longer have any demand worldwide, manufacturers will continue to produce them (and have replacement model churn out once every few years), simply because it is an important model representing their presence in the large size sedan segment, nothing less.

This is a totally new model and Hyundai has yet to release any tech details and u already know its the same size as 5 series? 

Anyway that gen of Azera u posted... I took a ride in it as a limo car from airport to Hotel when I was in Seoul and no matter how I look and feel inside, its bigger than 5 series, rear legroom was so spacious that u can actually sit cross legged if you want. U cannot do that in a 5 series unless u import a LWB 5 series from China.

Nvm la, this model is unlikely to see international market duties. No point talking about it.

If you bother to reader about it, the upcoming model is a facelift of the 2017 model, thus should have similar, if not the exact same dimensions as the current model, which you have taken a ride in Korea before.

As to why Grandeur/Azera has more spacious interior than similarly sized 5er and E-Class, just look closer at the dimensional drawings in my previous post, and you should see that it has a shorter overhang, which translate to more cabin space, even though it has the shortest wheelbase among the 3.

I am not good with cars, but I am supposing that since there is no indication of front and rear overhang in the azera, you were talking about the overall overhangs.  

From your drawings, the dimensions are as follow,  and you said that the spacious in the azera is due to a shorter overhang, but I dont understand how a car with similar overall length and a shorter WB can have shorter overhangs?

It seem to me that the Azera has the longest overall overhang? 

The 5er has the longest WB and the shortest overhangs, but personally I find the E class leg room better, and the azera best leg room.

when I bought my first sonata in 2002, I almost bought the Azera, but the 3.3L road tax, and the less than 6km/l mileage, together with the SE discouragement stopped me.

If the new one comes, I will seriously consider it this time round...

I sat in the Azera taxi in Singapore before. Really quite good, better than Sonata, i40, Epica, Latitude (or was it Fluence). The interior is very spacious for sure. Too bad my pocket not deep enough for a car even.😥

When I switched to the G80 from it I find some areas are a downgrade in fact, such as lack of rear door ashtrays and smaller boot space; I managed to fit a 40" TV into the Azera without folding down the rear seats!

Eh... I thought shorter wheelbase usually translates into less interior space... going by what you mentioned about the overhangs, I thought if the overall length of the car is shorter but the wheels are pushed out to the corners, the wheelbase will still be the same as a car with overall longer length and so maintain a similar interior space as the physically larger competitor...

@Tianmo @teomingern @Cheefarn Sorry, I did not make it clear enough with my point about overhang of the 3 models yesterday. I am referring to the front overhang, and in particular, the distance from the front wheel arch to the edge of the front door.

In the rearranged dimensional drawings below, I added 2 red lines to indicate the portion of the front overhang I am referring to, and now you should be able to see very clearly why Azera has the best interior space, although it wheelbase is the shortest among the 3.

Theoretically, the longer the wheelbase, the better interior legroom for any car model. BUT that is not quite the true in most cases, since wheelbase measurement started from the middle of the front wheel to middle of the rear wheel, and the portion between the red line (which are part of the engine bay instead of cabin) are typically "wasted".

I did a similar comparison previously for Mazda 3 too. So for your next car purchase, do look out for details, instead of referencing to technical spec...
